I was astounded at the difference a more direct flow made when directed over my precillipora ..spelling..(green with blue polyps). Much darker more defined colors.. just by adding more flow to the coral.

WOW

I guess I should have figured this out by now!

I think way too much emphasis is put on lighting when it comes to coral coloration and growth. IMO there are other factors that are at least if not more important such as nutrient levels, stability of parameters, circulation, etc...

I am SO happy that summer is over and my tank stays around 79-81

My colors are _much_ better.

Emphasis is put on lighting if you want growth. You can have great looking sps under 20K weaker lighting. Your growth will be minimal though. However if you want the best of both, then imo lighting is very critical.

I would put emphasis for the necessity on the following.

Water Quality
Lighting
Flow

Granted you need some of them all but I only have 20X turnover in my 180 and have very colorful and insanely fast growing corals. It is a combo of good water quality and good lightings with some flow. I feel I need more flow as my corals are getting very large. Will more flow help? I'm sure but running at 18 to 20X turnover is plenty if you do it correct. I would recommend more if possible though.

DUH

haha yea lighting is important. i was stating that when I increased my flow they colored up. I have 400w DE MH at 14k btw :)

They didnt REALLY color up untill i hit it with more flow :)
I run about 20x turnover btw.. works great
