IS it possible to keep SPS under power compact lighting or is it necessary to have halides?
I hace a 180 gal with 4 96 watt 10,000k dual daylights, and 2 96 watt actinics.

You can. I've seen it done many times. But over a 180 gallon, you will probably not be able to keep SPS in the bottom half of the tank.

There are a number of SPS that will do well on moderate light. You will want to keep them nearer the surface (probably upper third) using PC lighting.

I was thinking of going to aquacon and they have an SPS coral pack 12 that they pick for you and it sounds like a great deal but just wanted to make sure that im not going to get the caral and end up having them die a slow and painfull death.

If you do go for it make sure the tank is very stable. CA/ALK especially.

FWIW, If I were to get a SPS frag pack I would go with someone that has a better rep like reefermadness.us Reefermadness does a 20 for $200 plus ships free and throws in 2 free frags. They just charge $10 for the box so you are paying $210 for 22 frags, $9.55 a piece.

Aquacon hasnt had the best rep. in the past and at $139.99 for the non-bright SPS pack plus 39.99 for shipping would be $15.00 per frag. I would go with someone more reputable. Aquacon doesnt guarantee their frags where reefermadness guarantee their frags for 14 days, to me its a no brainer between the two. There are a lot of other good SPS dealers on line also.

In any case to start you would probably be best going with a local reefer and buying a monti of some sort. A cap or digitata would be best to test your waters, and shouldn't cost you more then $20.

Another good choice would be Pocilipora. You might also look into Live Aquaria and Reefhotspot.com. I've had good success from both.

You'll have much better luck continuing with this route. A majority of what you'll find from online stores are wild or 'aquacultured' pieces. They'll have a much more difficult time acclimating to tank conditions. www.frags.org is an excellent resource, for captive raised frags. If you have a local club, even better
