Few people on MR know that I am upgrading my 55 gallon softies/zoos tank to a 100 gallon mixed reef. Right now Im basically just doing a lot of research, designs for the filtration, and other factors which I need to take into consideration. But besides that I am very excited about adding SPS corals into the tank, especially acropora (really want that birdnest coral, dont know if its acropora). My tank is about to one year old on the day of my birthday on Aug. 19, and I feel as if I've made it! lol (well i heard about 80% or some crazy amount of people drop the hobby within the first year). So basically, I just want to know what are the ins and outs of keeping SPS. I am going to have a kalk drip, wanted to get a calcium reactor, but dont have the space and seems extremely complicated. Also, does anyone have a small frag which I can try out in my softies tank. I have suffiecient lighting for it in my 55 gallon (4 65 watters PC) and would put it in the top half of the aquarium. Thanks a lot guys!

Jawad,

SPS is a tough cookie but there are many you can get to start that will get you the bug - I started with Digitata which is in the Montipora family, not the acropora family and is a little easier to keep and some are pretty colorful. I still have the 5 digi's that I started with and still love them (purple tip with chocolate polyps, neon green, Orange on Orange, orange polyp from ORA and German Violet polyp from ORA.

BTW, I still don't own a reactor or drip Kalk and have tried the kalk drip but not the reactor. I can give you a piece of the neon green if you want to start out with that.

Good luck
