Endive Hydnophora

Anyone have experience with this coral and tissue degeneration? I used to have one and got rid of it, it was too aggressive. However, I recently saved one from a friend to try and recoup it.

Anyone know how to save it? Should I cut the bare skeleton away from the rest? It's not possible that it could regrow over the exposed calcium skeleton is it?

it's posssible for it to re-grow over the bare skeleton, but it must be kept clean of algae...it's just easier to cut it away.
