My friend has a 12" cap that is completely white in the center. Apparently his Flame angel has been picking on it without him realizing until he actually saw it.

My question is this, if he removes the flame, any chance of this cap coming back? Or should he frag and cut his losses?

Thanks,
Steven

Forgot to mention, cap is 12", but the center where it is white is about a 5" diameter :(

Jim is right. I moved my cap to a better rock and the edges got all mushed.
it has started to scroll up at the edges now.

this is a great observation. if I had not done this by mistake the cap would have kept growing flat. so if you want to control the growth of a cap just gently break the rim and it should scroll. :)

Jim is 100% correct and I'd bet it comes back. Any takers on this bet? lol

My quick story (actually, nothing I ever say is quick). I got about a 2" square piece of Orange Monti Cap. I two part epoxied it to a rock. Every piece of cap that touched the epoxy bleached completely white. The only thing that was left from this 2" square was about 1/8" stripe on either side of the cap. That was about 8 months ago. The cap is now completely grown over the bleached area and it is scrolling and encrusting.

I thought it was a goner. I know, I should have been a stand up comic, because this story is so dumb it's funny...lol

As long as the calcium and alkalinity are good, phosphates are non-existent, low nutrient level, it should grow back rather quickly. Also, make sure there is moderate water flow over the coral.
