I have a pink Pocillopora it opens up nice and has a nice pink color but the base in the center and bottom looks like it is dead.

When I got this it was in bad shape it has colored up nice. do they grow this way, or does it need more light? I have it mid way down in the tank. it is like it is growing out and not encrusting down like my othere SPS!
sorry about the bad pic thanks for any input

i believe he means stn, not rtn. STN is slow tissue necrosis or the slow loss of tissue. can be a result of several things. Not enough flow or too much flow, not enough light or too much light, or not proper tank parameters. If the part that appears dead does not have polyps then it is dead, if the part that appears dead does have polyps then it is sort of natural and ok form of bleaching. My sps the bottoms of them the polyps appear white because there is no light on the bottom of the coral

I have mazzive pocilli colonies and I know the pinks need alot of like Mike Ny told me that and he was dead on with that one try moving it up and frag off the dead pices.

I do not know about making that drop in temp, I am thinking that might stress the coral out. I have my tank at 77 to 79.

+1 on STN

tissue loss at base can mean alot of things including lighting. Additions of additives such as aminos and changes in carbon or GFO( abrupt reduction in system PO4) can also lead to STN.

The temp probably is ok.
