what are the effects of calcium on sps

SPS needs a balance of calcium , alkalinity and magnesium they each play an important role in the health of the corals skeleton without one of the three the coral will die

although there are many variables that directly effect the growth and health of SPS...calcium is a major one because their structures are mostly made up of it....thats why it's recommended to keep 400 or higher in our tanks...as far as too high I ran my tank at 500 for awhile too see if it directly effected the growth rate of SPS..it didn't!...I just had to clean the pumps and salt creep more often..

What do u guys shoot for I'm usually around 450 but my alk has been dropping every day I have to dose alk but cal stays stable

Matt ..my cal is 450 too....alk will deplete faster than cal, but just check your mag..it should be between 1350-1500..one thing it does is help stabilize the cal and alk
