The motor definitely sent a good electrical charge through your system which I think is more of a contributing factor.

Matt..believe me I feel your pain..many times I just wanted to throw in a gallon of bleach and forget it..LOL ..hang in there bro good things take time...you experienced the fast bad thing....we all have or will in this hobby....you didn't mention the pump... that can definately cause it...with big WCs really make sure the water parameters are as close as possible....and change the carbon often..

just a thought- but could there have been an abrupt drop in O2 from stirring up detritus similar to disrupting deep levels of sandbed?( increase anaerobes & Hydrogen Sulfide)
This could cause bleaching event.
Unlikely improved water clarity after stirring up things.

Who knows but next time I try to clean the bottom of sump I'm gonna suck it out with a wet dry vac
Tank still looks like cra- but every thing is alive and some things look a little better

Can you use a wet dry vac? I'd love to do the same but am not sure how the vacuum is going to react to the saltwater.
