This is my seventh tank, but it's my first marine tank. When done it will be a reef tank with some fish. It is a 450 gal. 1" thick acrylic tank that is 96" long x 36" wide x 30" tall. The stand (which I made with the help of some friends) is the same dimensions but 40" tall. I still have to paint and install the stand's 4 doors. The canope isn't made yet, but it will be 24" tall, making the entire system 8.5 feet tall... thank god for cathedral ceilings.
Before I brought the tank in, I had to do some spelunking under the house to install two beams and six cement pilons. That was a messy, smelly, hot >90deg, spidery job, but it had to be done when adding 6000lbs to a raised floor.
The tank has dual center overflows with a center return... no wires or pipes on the outside of the tank. I originally wanted to use it as a room divider, but had no more money for an expansion on the house. So up against a wall it went.
I have a 50gal sump (need to get a much bigger one) that has a Mag 24 pump driving an Aqua-C EV400 Protein Skimmer and another Mag 24 pump for the return. The return water goes through 2 sqids. But I think I still need more flow in my main tank.
The sump has 50/50 power compact lighting. The main tank has 4 x 96w Super Actinic VHOs and 2 x 400w 6500K metal halides.
There is 5 to 6 inches of oolitic aragonite plus 40lbs of puca shells in the back. There is 88lbs of uncured Tonga Branch, 165lbs of uncured Kalini Rock and 10lbs of cured Fiji. I added 5lbs of GARF's Grunge to my sump and I also added IPSF's Coralline Booster and Surf Zone (copepods, spaghetti worms, bristle worms, micro-hermits and snails.
After a 2 weeks I added 12 cerrith snails and 2 emerald crabs.
Water is from a 7 stage 200gal/day RO/DI unit and I use IO for salt. I still have to run a new circuit to the tank, I have tripped the breaker once already when all the lights are on.
I have been doing this real slow so far... got the reef bug last summer, researched on Internet and bought the tank used in February. Joined SCMAS (Southern California Marine Aquarium Society) in March. I tried to sand and polish the tank myself... but after spending a lot of time getting nowhere, Candelario from Tropical Illusions do the polishing (they did an excellent job). Finished the stand and setup the tank in July. 10 guys from around the neighbourhood carried the tank from the garage all the way around to the backyard, in through the patio doors and in to the living room.

myreeef,

Very Nice tank!! That is going to be a great setup when stocked. Question on you MH lights are there reflector on them and of course with the Hood that will direct the light into the tank. Also are you planing on adding more rock just curious to know. :D

Post a picture!

I'm about to order a similar tank. 480 gallons. 96" long, 48" wide, and 24" tall.

Who makes the aragonite sand, or where did you find it at? I'm trying to find a not horribly more expensive substitute to using just basic kids playbox sand (southdown or tropical play sand) from home depot.

Is that enough lighting to see well in it?

I am told that this is not enough lighting and I do have a couple of darker spots... for now I'll just keep the coral in the brighter spots.

I bought a pallet 70 x 40lb bags of aragonite from Pure Aragonite (in New Jersey), I still have about 20 bags for sale at $17 each (Los Angeles area). I stayed away from the Southdown because of the "possibility" of problems later on... I know that many people swear by it, but I am not willing to take that chance on an investment this large.

Over a period of two weeks, I put in:
2 flashing scallops
2 yellow tangs (2.5 inches each)
1 percula clown (I think a false percula) (1.5 inches)
2 pacific blue tangs (1 inch each)
1 powder blue tang (4 inches)
1 blue carpet anemone
1 orange tube anemone
1 brain coral
1 open brain coral
1 other coral I don't know the name.
1 green serpent star (in the sump)

My tank was running too warm last week, I need to get a chiller. Through the heat wave, I lost the powder blue tang and one of the pacific blue tangs was looking very ill last night (haven't seen him yet today).

Hey, you scared me a bit, I thought you are the MyReef from My Reef Creations. Until I reread your post, I finally noticed the different spelling of your handle............

Hey, the tank looks great! However, the flame scallop is not a good thing for you. Unless you can target feed it phytoplankton on the daily basis, 99% of us can't keep it alive past a few weeks.

How long has the tank been setup?

The tank has been up for about 6 weeks now. I've been feeding the tank phytoplankton daily for the past 2 weeks (when I got the scallops) and started feeding the scallops phytoplankton (via a turkey baster) yesterday.

Here is a picture of the right side of my tank. I'm gonna have to climb a ladder and clean that coraline growing on the acrylic.
