Nice stuff man. I think it looks much better and I thought the old one was good. Did you lose a lot of "live" stuff during the process?

Nice work guys. I like the new look much better myself. I wish I had someone as interested in this as myself that lived so close. I am jealous of you two.

Chris, I def think the rockwork looks better now. You guys did a nice job! :D

What kind of bit did you use? And did any of the rocks break?

I used a masonry bit, or I should say X used the masonry bit for the live rock, live rock is weird it actually bleeds when you drill it. This white rock liquid comes out and hardens, it is strange. I had to use wodden posts for this I am newvous about it. I am hoping it is only temporary and that I can find some plastic posts to uses instead. I did have plastic posts but one i cut them it was metal on the inside of them. i ran to the home depot and the only alternative that suited the size of the bit I bought was wood.
live rock breaks easy vut if you take your time drilling it isn't a problem, just be careful. we had some break but we either made them rubble for the fuge ot drillled only half way and made an end cap for the top. thanks for the comments, i am totally happy with what was accomplished.
thanks X

After I get home from work I will post if I have had any changes in water chemistry. I did notice that I am missing one little frag, I checked everywhere and I don't see it, It may have been put into the fuge as rubble. I dunno. other than that I didn't lose any livestock that I can notice.

OK everything was right on the money except for ammonia which was at 0.50 a little high. X thinks it is die off from having the rocks out of the water, i guess it could be he took so damn long drilling. I did try to wrap them in wet towells and stuff, but i guess this is how it is going to be a for a few days i am going to do a water change tomorrow

This has been a very entertaining thread guys. Thanks for the trip down "rock-drilling lane". These projects are what I think keep this hobby very interesting. Certainly not the only thing interesting, but still fun to read about. Thanks again.

I really like the way your rockwork looks now, but a bit puzzled by the decision to use wooden dowls. Is there something else to hold the rock together once they rot? Also, won't the dowls produce nitrates etc as they rot? :?

the amount of actual wood in the tank is minor. 5 dowels, each about a foot long. i doubt the wood itself will create much nitrate, but it's possible the wood could absorb things that should be filtered out. however, this tank has a decent sized fuge on it, and a good amount of live rock. it should take care of that issue.

as far as the rotting, we're not sure. it will last plenty long to find a worthy replacement. and it's also a possibility that the rock will be fused together by growth- coralline, coral overgrowth..things like that very well could sure those rocks. but it's all a learning process. shavo and i decided to try something new instead of following everyone else.

Yeah, I've often thought about doing something similar (but a horizontal arch, instead) but have never really gone ahead with it because I didn't find plastic that was rigid enough and didn't want to go with anything else.

yes. the best thing would be pvc, except that the smallest size is 1/2". which is kinda big IMO. if you think pvc won't be strong enough, you could fill it with mortar. you'd have to go through the curing process, but now you'll have some strong rods!
if you think this will work for you, just use a funnel and some kind of vibrator to make sure the mortar reaches the length of the pipe. it's entirely do-able!
