My Tang died today  For the past few days he hasn't been as active and looked a little thin. I am not sure what the cause of this is, other than my tank being 6.5 weeks old. The other two (coral beauty and maroon clown) are fine. My water parameters for the past two weeks have been good. Just making adjustment to ALK or PH after it drops to the low zone. Nitrates are under 20. My waters fine I believe. The only thing that did vary was the temperature. This is the only reason I can think of. Last week when I got home after work my water temperature reached 82 degrees. There were a few occasions where the temperature reached 82 or a low of 72 degrees. Could that sudden change in temperature be the cause of the Tang's death? I really liked that Tang.

My chiller arrives here Wednesday, so I think my temperature issues should be resolved. Over the weekend I removed all the sand, installed a spraybar, and got a new skimmer (aquac remora pro). I can already see an improvement in my water quality. Looks crystal clear now.

new pics. I was guilty, I got a few more corals but they're hardy.

that's a mag 9.5 powering that spraybar. It's running in a closed loop and once the chiller gets in I will hook it up in series. The two powerheads handle majority of the deadspots. The pump for the skimmer is visible. I will change the plumbing and hide the pump towards the bottom.

I'm sorry for your lost of your tang, it is the purple tang is it not? :( In any case, they need a large tank that is well age and high water quality. On your stabilizing your ALK and Ph, there be some with the understanding that having a decent depth sand bed which could assist you in doing this. Of course, it depends on what you choose to believe in this hobby. In either case, I would have not less then a 3" deep aragonite sand bed in that tank. You seem to have a good handle on most everything else to what you want to do and I hope that you have a great deal of luck in completing this tank as for the way you want it too look once is fully stocked.

It was a Kole Tang that I lost. I added him too early, and it was a sad day when I lost him. I really like Tangs and I know it's going to be awhile until I can have a school of them.

I've been contemplating about the sand. Next week I pick up the overflow, sump, and skimmer. I'm not sure if there's enough room for a refugium, if so I'll add sand in there. I am not sure about the display tank though.

i'm no expert, but i think a 10 degree variation in water temperature might have had something to do with the death of the tang, and perhapse other tankmates too. how does this happen? from day to night?

I think the excessive heat buildup in my tank was caused by the Mag 9.5 pump. I got the pump shortly after upgrading to metal halides, and the temperature swings started at this time. I have a chiller now

Finished my sump and stand. The picture makes the water look yellowish, but with my Euroreef hooked up the water quality is excellent.

Here's a pic of my ghetto sump. At least it's functional. I'm loving my skimmer. It's keeping my 50 gallon really clean. It's a euroreef that was used on a 180 gallon prior.

looks great!
hey, is that mag 9.5 in the display? the reason i ask is that anemone travel around a bit. they can easily get sucked into powerheads. you might want to put a sponge cover over those intakes.

My 9.5 broke :-( It was hooked up to my wavemaster and I wonder if that's the cause. My mag 5 from my aquac remora is now my return pump. Yes, when they were in the display tank I did cover the intake.

I lost several corals due to my powerhead pointed directly at it. I didn't know  I got a few really nice frags over the weekend though. I traded them for the wavemaster.

I forgot the name of it, but it's just to the left of the magenta stylophlora. It's a beauty, but my camera's zoom function broke. Couldn't get a better view of it. It's really pretty. Bottom left is a green polyp leather. To the right of it is a green slimer but I think that guy is a goner (powerhead) :(

Did you get a new tank? You really think you can have a school of tangs in a 50 gallon? I'm not the tang police, but you REALLY need to rethink your choices of fish.

I made mistakes in the past. Haven't you? I was planning on upgrading tanks, and someday when I get a large tank I'll have a school of tangs. For you to assume I meant a school of tangs in a 50 gallon is beyond ridiculous making you a retard.

btw, do you see any tangs in there now? No..? You blind too? shut up and let the adults talk then
