Honey, which is rich in either sugar and amino acids, can be used as carbon source and protein synthesis source. For carbon source, might act as Vodka, should be helpful in removing nitrate and phosphate. As for the protein synthesis source, amino acids are essential compositions of proteins. Since the colors of the corals are lights emitted from the fluorecent proteins in the corals, providing sufficient amino acids should be efficient for the protein synthesis. The more the fluorecent proteins inside the corals, the intenser the color of the corals.

This is suggested and tested by myself. Any question or comment are welcome to discuss here!

How much do you dose and any negatives when you started in the beginning?

Before dosing, I usually dilute the honey in fresh water in the ratio of 1:100 (honey/water). With the dilute solution prepared, 1 ml soultion is dosed per 25 gal (~100 liter). No negatives are observed to date. I start to dose honey since two years ago. Should be feasible to reef tanks. You can try this method with half the dosing amount in the beginning.

We have a large marine aquarium website called "pH 8.4" in Taiwan. Almost everyone who are interested in reef keeping will register as a member here. I often go there for advanced information about the coral keeping stuff. Honey addition was learned from there too. Unfortunately, the website is in Chinese only.

Here is the webiste connection: http://ph84.idv.tw/cgi-bin/board/leobbs.cgi

Yes, we have lots of LFS here in Taiwan that sell good fishes and corals. The most famous corals natilvey in Taiwan is the zoas. Most zoas in my tank are originating in Taiwan. Mostly shallow water zoas. However, they look quite similar to those zoas called "Japaness deep-water zoas". They are handy to obtain here and not difficult to keep them healthy in aquarium.

Do you know which parts of the island are they harvested from?

Sorry that I do not know about where they harvest them. But to my best knowledge, I have see some in very southern part of Taiwan where inside the KenTing national park. Since it is inside the national park, it is ofcorse forbiden to collect any of them even a dead rock on the beach.

Cozer,

I came to the States in 1982 from Taiwan, but your English writing is much better than mine.

Just a stupid question, have you studied in USA or other countries?

James,

My English is so-so on wring actually. I have stayed in Canada for 10 months when I was 10 years old. After that, I came back to Tiawan. Maybe it is because I had lots of opportunities contacting with foreign students and professors when I was in graduated school. I like to talk with people from different countries. And that is why I am here in MR, LOL!

Cozer,

Be my guest when you come to NY.

Just curious, how long has the LED fixture from Thorntex been in the market? Are there any quality problems?

I bought the first fixture form ThorTek in Nov. 2008. For the 8 months use, there is still no big problems besides the noise of the cooling fan. And they have sent me a new one for replacement and is for free.As I know, the new typical fixtures are now all installed with the better fans with much lower noise. At least, my new 36" Typical is quieter than the former old type product.

ThorTek has begun their selling in June, 2008. If there are serious problems with the products, should have been posted and discussed on the biggest forum of marine aquarium (pH 8.4). According to my disccusion with the GM of ThorTek, he told me that they cooperate with several LED suppliers for testing the LED performance and the heat transfer efficiency of the heat sink. They have all the test done before manufacturing the products.

That's all I know. Hope this information helps!

Sorry for the intrusion cozer :)

James,
Does your Solaris optics cover the 24" front to back light spread?

No. It is the biggest problem for LED lighting, the scope of the light is much smaller/narrower than MH and florecent lights such as T5. I have 72" Solaris I4 for 175G (6 feet long, 24" at center and 18" at sides, 30" deep) bowfront tank, comparing with my other tanks with 250W MH + T5, any corals, especially SPS have not been growing or even surviving well if they are not covered under the scope.

Here is a link to my 175G under Solaris I4.

The dead spot can not be shown on the pictures, you'd better come to my office and see it by yourself at the next LIRA meeting.
