I It seems prices sometimes get a bit blown out a bit here.

I don't think you have been on the board that much to make a comment like that because if you where you would know that's not true at all. As a matter of fish there isn't alot of talk about very expensive fish here and most of the corals that are listed are cheap, specially compared to alot of other places.

As for the price of the trigger, well I saw the fish myself at MM and know exactly what it was and that it was a rare fish because I've only seen it once before in a shop about 7 years ago, some one on RC also currently has one. Because of that I checked the price out myself and I'm pretty sure the price was between $2,500-$2,700 which I thought was quite alot for the fish, also there was nothing else in the tank that would have been marked that high.

Michael

PS: Also it great to find a store and put all your trust in one place but there are alot of other places out there that are just as good as AF and they offer the same fish for less.

LMAO....public advocate for AF. I wanna see the "all the rare items from Absolutely Fish" bought by rarefish1. To me, that will be the ultimate statement to their quality justifying their prices.

I know I bought a Hippo Tang from AF that has done extremely well in my system. I'm comfortably with what I paid, but Hippos are far from rare. Now show me several rare $1000 fish in the same system bought at AF, and they can have all my livestock business.

As for being the notion I am with Absolutely Fish, I am not. I have been shopping at the store since it was Aqua tropics, if any of you know that name. I am dedicated to using local stores and all it seems that is said, is all bad opinions of these places, not just AF. What about the good experiences? Everyone is too high!! They are all crazy in what they sell stuff for. I am not the one who will spend 10 dollars on a fish from an online store if I cannot see it. Why buy a car, a watch, or any item for that fact, if you cannot see it in person. Anyway else, in my opinion, is just ignorant. We all forget that, like ourselves, people earn salaries and if our companies don't get money through any means, our jobs or pay would be cut. I am just someone who is an advocate of buying locally and not some guy in in basement selling me stuff. As for being on board, I have just recently joined these things. Don't you think if I was part of a store, i would have been chiming in all long. There are many people who may have been around for a while and not joined here. We all have our 2 cents.

I really think you need to read the board as yes there are bad things said but most of things said are about how places could improve or things that people need to worry about if they buy at a store, like FishTown as you need to quartine all their fish. As for good exprecience you'll find many are posted here, not just the bad ones. Also you'll find that most people here do buy from the LFS but in alot of case they just don't have the selection or there are very few in the area, just take alook at Manhattan as outside of the Petland & Petco how many other stores are there to choose from. I think most people would rather but from LFS and see what they're getting but between the few store that we have and then prices that some charge everyone is look at other places from on-line to mail order to buying from other memebers.

I was one of the first people here to advocate going to AF's Midnight Madness because of the good experience I had last year. I even linked good experiences other members had with AF from previous years. Props are given when props are due.

I imagine you are referring to Northeast Aquatics here?! I've personally been to Joe's on more than one occasion, and every time has been extremely pleasant and rewarding. He's patient and seemingly more knowledgeable than any worker at AF. Comparing his operation to AF's is not fair. AF obviously focuses on fish, while Joe focuses on corals. AF cannot hold a torch to NEA in terms of coral quality and selection and Joe couldn't match AF's selection of fish. To sell great coral, all you need is a basement. So in my opnion as a coral buying customer, I'll take "some guy in a basement".

I am not talking about Northest Aquatics, I am just generalizing about online stores, since I travel for work and seen some places. They either pull your stuff from a wholesaler direct and charge us retail prices or it is sold out of a basement. As for Joe, I cannot speak for how knowledgable he is, since I never met him and am not going to prejudge him. But I would say for AF's staff, there are quite a number of people who are extremely knowledgable. Coral and fish selections, I would have to see what he has, but sorry, AF gets killer stuff every week in coral and fish. Have you ever seen that back tank or the selection when they take trips to california? I have always wondered things though, the reef hobby is the highend area of fish keeping. We all know the prices we have to deal with. Would we buy a dodge viper for the money and then complain about how much it costs for an oil change or tune up? I guess we all have our favorite spots to go for our livestock and that is all.

Except everything you go there they're behind the counter talking to each other and seem bother when you ask them for some thing. They only want to help you if your ready to buy something and then they just bag it up. AF service was never a great point of that store so for all the knowledge that they have it doesn't do much good if the service is bad.

Just because the equipment and things are expensive doesn't mean you have to go to the high end store to get things. You can still get great corals & fish for good prices but you need to look around and use all the available places.

And yeah I just love paying big bucks for those brown zoo's at some of these place. :wink1:

A few things from our end:

1st - alot of our stuff is handpicked, be it from the Ocean, Los Angeles, local wholesalers/jobbers

2nd - I pride my personal knowledge to helping other reefers out. We don't do this for money, we do this for a hobby. I wouldn't have bought the fish or any fish in the first place if I didn't think it was a good fish for captivity and a cool fish.

3rd - Based on the price AbFish paid for their Trigger, which was $750 from a local wholesaler, there is no way with their 4-5x markup that it was $1000. Even the Misbarred Ocellaris from ORA they charge more than $30 for...

4th - As much as we'd love to open up a store front, we don't have the money. We have other jobs and other responsibilities. Unfortunately it is almost $500k startup, not to mention a double in price in services(water, electric)

We enjoy helping the community and the other hobbyiests. I personally have made many a friend and consider this business a privilidge. Not for nothing, but I don't see any local stores contributing anything to the community. Everyone's just worried about group buys and making the highest markup possible.

Sorry for the rant, i've been up since 6 driving around and acclimating livestock for Macna.

I'd ransack that basement anyday of the week!

That fish is nice, but IMO nothing beats a supermale crosshatch w/ his b!tch!
different strokes for different folks. I wonder whos tank the champs going to...hmmmm:)

Let?s settle this

Some of you might no me a have been posting for a while. I do work for Absolutely Fish on sat. We did sell that trigger last sat for $950; it was original marked $1100. I know rarefish1 he does not work for us he is a very good customer who buys some crazy rare fish for example as far as I know he owns unless he as recently lost something a pair of Conspicillatus Angel, a Spanish flag, Carmabi basslett. Also he as owned and maybe still owns an Interruptus Angel, Joculator Angel, and Resplendens Angel. He only for the most part buys rare fish I am only listing the extremely rare stuff he as bought but he also as bought fish like a Goldflake angel and any other oddball fish. I hope this clears some stuff up.

I like Abs fish.... I was in a huge bind a few years ago doing a Jewlery show in Javits convention center, and needed some big fish for a display tank since a few I had brought with me kicked the bucket due to a major snafu on behalf of the contractors who were supposed tohave all the tanks assembled and ready to go.

I am fully aware of what is "rare" and what prices can and should be, but keep in mind, SUPPLY AND DEMAND, and Local markets vary from town to town. NYC; that same fish can be 3K , yet in Trenton NJ it is 2200.00, and Wyoming, it is a filet of fish sandwich for 4.99 at Bobs Grill on the westbound Route 44. :D

Just because some thign is "rare" does not mean it is valuable to all.

It is indeed a nice fish :)

Find me a nice looking Feminine Wrasse, and that is "valuable" to me ;)
