The prob with the halides is the heat. Even with the less in my tank the temp is up at 80 degrees. These tanks are more or less sealed other than the overflow section which is fairly small so any heat is held I the tank. The less def make a difference with the heat and is the REASON I would only go with the led hood. Well also that the electric is less
Hate to say it, but it is HARD to find the JBJ 28 LED for sale used. I happened to stumble across mine. I was about to buy it new, but then BAM just appeared.... GOOD LUCK!!!!!
But I would not setting for a halide in a cube with a sealed hood, IMO asking for heat problems and you then be running a chiller. At a LFS near me, they have 2 units one LED and HQI and they even have chiller running on the HQI there.
Not necessarily! Do not just look at the cost of the tank.
You need to figure in everything.
Halide Bulbs need to be replaced... LED's don't well in 5 years maybe...
Heat from Halide may require a chiller!
Then running the tank! Halides will def cost more to run than the LED's
On top of that now you may need to run a chiller!
So figure the cost of the HQI verison with chiller and then replacement bulbs over 2 years lets say.
Then figure the cost of the additional electricity to run the halide and the chiller. I think that you will be surprised to see that the LED will be cheaper. Yes maybe a bit more, but not by much if you have to go out and now buy a chiller on top of the tank.
