While we can all certainly appreciate these fine glasswork on their own, they are actually designed to provide homes for living hermit crabs.  According to his website, “Robert has imitated the interior shape of each of his hand blown crystal shells, following the spiral formations which accommodate the contours of a hermit crab’s body.”
