hey duke, the new coral magazine issue has a big article on biopellets and how they are a carbon source, they mention that they work well but are not really advanced yet as far as fine tuning them to your system, also the bacteria that they are said to grow are a different strain than you would get from a liquid carbon source. also if yo do not have the bacteria to begin with then there will not be anything to grow, so a starting culture may be needed.. also the autor stated that he had good results from the bio pelletes but had the best rsults from using the biopellets as well as a combination of liquid carbon sources(vodka, vinegar and vitamin c) be combined it creates a food source for the different strains of the bacteria that will help reduce nitrates and phosphates...

I just started using vinagar mixed with the kalk in my ATO to supersaturate it and because I was having some algae issues even though my phos is reading .02 and nitrates 0 we'll see..........
update....vinagar in the kalk is doing the job...only alittle algae here and there...Phos is undectable as well as nitrates....PH went from 7.8 night and 8.0 day up to 8.0 night and 8.2 day..cal stayed the same 475, but the alk jumped up alittle bit from 8.5 to 9.6 which is still good. I started developing white slime algae only in the sump. I was dosing 10ml per gallon of limewater and will cut it back alittle to see if that helps......

i use bio pellets.. only time you will have a problem is if you use a reactor with a sponge like pad bc itll clogg up and slow down creating a major bacterial bloom, and then when you change out or remove the sponge bc u realized the flow was wrong you flush everything out and cause a bacterial bloom and have a problem.. if your gonna do it do not use the BRS media reactor for biopellets, use a real media reactor and make sure it has no sponge like mash only the plastic mesh or high flow holes..

i hope that made sense

I liked the Bio Pellets the first 4 months. After that had cyano problem. I don't know what went wrong for sure. Bio Pellets good for nirates but do nothing to control phoshates. Over rated.. needs to be improved.. my 2cents... I got nothing good out of that artical.

Speaking in terms of a reef system.....Vodka dosing basically makes a super clean environment for your corals to grow in, that's the main reason why people see an increase in growth and coloration. I myself vodka dose, and have seen amazing results.

And also...a good skimmer is a must when vodka dosing, or else it will not work. The nitrifying bacteria use this source of carbon dosing to just work super fast in breaking down organic compounds, therefore increasing skimming amounts
