My nitrates are a little high and i was thinking about some sort of carbon dosing. What is the safest way to dose vodka, sugar, vinegar or peroxide.I read some things about vodka and it kind of makes me a bit nervous.Plus i really dont want my corals colors fading. My nitrates are about .15ppm.

I switched from vinegar to the Red Sea NO3:PO4-X.

I like it because I can quantitatively measure my doses without guessing, in accordance to the instructions. It smells like vodka, vinegar and RC car nitro fuel mixed together.

Ed,

Are you manually dosing RSP's NO3:PO4-X? I tried with a dosing pump, but due to it exposed to air, the methanol is evaporating. So I've been just manually dosing it :(

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you too S :)

I also dose by hand, twice a week... about 4ml's per shot. Makes sense that the methanol / ethanol evaps quicker than the water base. Would you agree that this is some really smelly stuff? :)

i dose vodka and this is how i do it after some reasearch..

80 proof vodka i use a 3ml syringe

1. starting dose of 0.1 mL per 25g daily for 3 days
2. days 4-7 double daily dose to 0.2mL per 25g daily
3. each week add additional 0.5mL (regarless of volume)
- if no nutrient level decrease is noted the folowing week add aditional 0.5mL
-when No3 and Po4 starts to decrease maintain current dose
4. when levels start to become undetectable cut current dose by 1/2
-this will become your new maintanence dose
5. if levels start to increase, increase daily dose by 0.1mL
-increments are PER WEEK, until levels start to decrease again

keep records of your dosing and maintain your alk and ca levels, also pay attention to your PH.

good luck duke!

Yes it does, like you said it reminds me of the days of the RS4 Nitro days :D Thanks for sharing your frequency of use. It hasn't done much for my PO4 levels, been using LaCl3 once a week for that.

I'm far from an expert, I tried vodka for a while and it worked ok as
Long as you don't OD the tank. The thing I had an issue with was continuing he dosing when I went away for a week...I was forced
To stop cold turkey and came home to a huge cyano outbreak that took 2 months to get rid of. I then switched to biopellets and my tank has never been clearer. So I run PO4x4 in one reactor and BRS Biopellets in another. THe only manual dosing I do now is alk/cal.

I used vodka for a couple of months, but must have done it wrong, since the corals started detaching from the skeleton. I reduced the dosage back to the starting point and waited a few months before increasing the dosage and again the tissue detached. So I got an aquipure denitrifier, and dose the vodka into that instead. nitrates dropped from 40ppm to zero within a month and only use 8mL of vodka a week.

I have the same de nitifier that u do mine are. at about 15 ppm I'm doing 10 mls a week how big is ur tank homegrowchild

I'm using the medium size (rated 55-130gal) aquaripure denitrifier. Got about 85 gallons of water volume with 4 tangs all 4-6" in size plus another 10 miscilaneous 2-3"fish. Pretty high fish load in that I'm growing a 38 gallon sump full of calupra, but that can't keep up with the fish load. In the beginning, I was dosing twice a week at 8mL. Once nitrates reached zero, I'm dosing once a week. Dosing higher then 8mL at a time is inefficient, causing clogs. If you want to increase the output of the filter, dose more frequently, not more volume per dose.
