How long do you think I can run my 29 Gal with at least 75 lbs of live rock and a powerhead. I have t5's (brand new) and misc corals (lps, softies and a clam). I do weekly water changes of 20% cause I have 3 yellow tangs which I feed a lot and a clown. I want to build a fuge in the long run but just wondering if you guys have any insights. Thanks.

please keep in mind the tangs are currently 1.5 inches and I don't plan on keeping them in there forever. Instead of flaming why don't you give me your opinion so I can make things better? I've been checking the levels everything is good except for the nitrates being 10. But I constantly do water changes to bring it down to 0. I dont mind the water changes as it takes me just 5 mins or so.

I would sandstorm the tank while you are doing a water change just to get rid of some of the ditrus build up.

I don't seem to have any ditrus in the sand. I have a good amount of nefarious snails which I think contributes to maintenance of the sand. But will keep in mind thanks!

Do you guys think the ick is strengthened by the size of my aquarium? As in the tangs are stressed with limited space? Though they seem ok, currently grazing on the rocks, very responsive to food, no apparent aggression etc.

I'm definitely no tang aficionado... but from what I've seen in my short while with this hobby, tangs are pretty prone to ick and keeping them in a tank that small (not giving them the width they need to swim about) is just making them extremely stressed. Your statement of them eating does seem to indicate that they don't seem to be very stressed - maybe cause they're still small... but from every tang "story" I've seen on this site & others... they all need to be re-homed, and the sooner the better. I think you're better off getting fish that you can keep for an indefinite amount of time. That way theres no chance a tang eventually suffering.

Of course there is always some one with a 100g+ that has a tang with ick, but thats prob. due more to lack of hiding spaces and living with incompatible species.

How did you get that much live rock into that tank. You must be a master in Tetris! No sarcasm intended, but thats pretty amazing.

lol I could be wrong on the weight. How many lbs do you guys think I have?

Here's a video. Full tank shot is at the end. I wanted help identifying the corals but noone has replied to my post on Identification :(

Please excuse the sound. Initially the tank was just a live rock holding tank and I even took out some rock to put the corals in.
My friend has had an ick outbreak and wanted to hypo his tank so i'm holding onto his corals. The tangs arrived accidentally also.

I was going for a fuge but will get the skimmer first then build a fuge. I heard AquaClears turn into real nice fuges eh? maybe I can do both.

The video actually explains alot. Most of your rock seems very dense. And aquaclears to make nice fuges. Its pretty much empty out the media, add a layer of substrate, and throw in some calerpa. and strap on a light (reptile heatlamps with a dayglo blub works fine). Where did your friend get that red and green brain. Very nice.

I forgot to mention, that using only the live rock in a tank as a filtration system instead of having a physical filter is a very popular filter method. I think it was callled the Dutch method, not entirely sure. But with that amount of livestock in your tank, you should look for a quality protein skimmer. There was a coralife 65 on the marketplace. That would be a good and cheap skimmer for you to use.
