Just cut down on the feeding to twice a week. And 20 percent twice a week isn't going to kill anyone. Thats what I use to do for my 220 before I figured out that Salt is expensive. Where do you live by. I have an older coralife 65 you can borrow. I'm going to need it later though, one of my friends is upgrading her 10 gallon reef into a 29.

pm sent. thanks!!

UV is good because it kills ich that are still free floating. This does work, but you will still need to do it for awhile because there will still be alot that are living among your rocks and sand.

The downside to a UV is it can only kill the parasites that actually pass through the unit.

If you cannot set up a hospital tank then you are forced to just use the UV, and feed well and cross your fingers.

I think you need to make every effort to keep up the water changes to reduce the ammonia reading back to zero.

I also would not waste the money on the Kick-Ich

from my understanding, the ich will eventually always go through a free swimming cycle in which, I figure, the uv would get them no? I have the intake and the outtake for the UV on separate ends and realize this might take 2 months. What do you think the chances of the ich surviving after 2 months of this remedy?

If I recall correctly, ich, as with many other fish parasites, is always present. Healthy fish are quite able to combat infestations without the aquarium keeper ever knowing it is there. Healthy fish are stress free fish. 3 tangs in what amounts to (by the looks of things)15 gallons of water (think displacement) would need weekly water changes at the barest minimum. Although they are eating and appear happy, proper stocking is generally based upon the adult size of the fish so yes, you will constantly get spikes in nitrates etc.. Basically, keep 5 gallons of fresh mix (powerhead and heater to match tank parameters) made up at all times and test parameters daily . Using this method, you can kep your system running without a filter indefinitely. I would however re-home those tangs asap and a protein skimmer can't hurt.

I didn't see this thread until now. I have read through it and it has deviated from its original point which was "How long do you think I can run my 29 Gal with at least 75 lbs of live rock and a powerhead".
Since now we are trying to help him save what he has I think it is fair to say this experiment did not work. But maybe not because of what his concern was which was not using a filter. Chances are we would be at this stage even with a filter.
