whats a good sized sump???

i am going to be starting my first SW tank i will be building a sump. what is a good sized tank to use that will be big enough to filter the tank correctly but not so big that i wont be able to put it any where.

also can i use scrubbies or do i need to use bioballs???

i will be running a in sump skimmer also. and how much room should i dedicate for the scrubbies/bioballs???

just read the rest of your thread i would'nt use bio balls or anything you dont need it and it will cause problems baffle off your sump and use a skimmer the live rock is your bio

if its a standard stand it's 49x19 exterior dimension, take off 1 1/2" for the thickness of the wood used, and you are at 46x16, those stand usually have a center brace, try to get as big of a sump thru the opening. providing you are using an internal over flow, you will drain down 7.5 gallons of water in case of a power outage, calculate that into your design, as also the height of the running water level of a skimmer.

scrubbies things you use to clean dishes i know there are used in FW sumps in place of the ceramic rings for the BB wasnt sure if they could be used in SW setups.

the tank does have a internal overflow i built a stand for it do not know the inside dimensions right now the stand is at my buddys house right now.

would a 30 long do it if not i will just have to build a bigger stand to fit in what i need

A 30 long should do it as long as you dont make your baffels to high. What type of skimmer do you plan on using? That should depict on how high your baffels will be

the biggest sump you can fit the better a 30 long would be good i have a 90 and have a 40 breeder for a sump

ok so change of planes i am going to stick with my original setup and use my 55 gallon tank i am going to build a new stand to fit it in. i am in the middle of drawing the layout i will post it when im done to see what everyone thinks but real quick where the flow comes in from the overflow im thinking the first chamber will go into a filter sock and having live rock in the bottom then threw a bubble trap into the protien skimmer chamber then into the next chamber that will be empty maybe for a little grow out/beef up area then threw anouther bubble trap to a small chamber with the return bump.

main Q's are is the grow out/beef up chamber good or bad idea.

and is chamber one ok like this or should i put the live rock in a chamber by itself???

It sounds good but you dont need the first bubble trap. The only buuble trap needed is right before it goes into the return pump chamber. If your gonna put any other chamber other then first, skimmer and return, I would put a fuge. I don't think its a good idea to do a grow out section down there. Thas what frag tanks are made for:wink1:

how high should my baffles be the 55 gallon if 21 inches high???

It really depends on what type of skimmer you want to run. Protein skimmers have to run at a stable water height to be efficent. I would say the "norm" is around 8-9", which will leave you pleanty of room for drain down on the dt if the power goes out.
