Hey Folks,
I was troubling Richie (rkgalozager) with my many tank woes and he gave me some great advice.

This particular advice was to help me increase the flow rate from my Dual Media Reactor (the ones that we typically use to hold GFO and Carbon run on 1 pump).

Quick Notes:
Need- Large diameter sponge material- similar to the foam on your return pump nozzle or in your overflow to block detritus.

Scissors

Your Reactor

Personal safety material

Here goes the photos to explain instead of my multi paragraph bit:

1. Open up the reactor, and take one of the canisters

2. You will be working with this section

3. Take off the cap and look at the crud (small carbon or gfo material)

4. Use scissors or something similar (Be safe, no one is liable for your health/safety but you) to press out or release the cage that is in the cap

5. See, you are just trying to push out this ring

6. Tada!

7. Take out that dirty sponge

8. You can rinse it and store it somewhere, you do not need it if this mod works for you

9. Here is a picture of the OLD sponges and the new more coarse sponge that we will cut to fit as replacements

10. Close up of the new sponge vs old you can see how the old sponge would get clogged quickly

11. See cut to fit

(I got impatient and elected to just fit in smaller pieces that fit instead of getting the exact circle cut. Of course this circle is thin to be similar to the cap size

This one is cut thicker to resemble the size that's in the canister.

12. Then replace the caps

That's pretty much it.

After I did that it was smoooooth sailing and a strong flow.

This is a simple DIY not made to infringe upon any companies, etc. There is no profit involved. No warranty to infringe upon, etc. I nor the person who originally generated the idea are to be held liable for ANYTHING.
:) Just love of the hobby and sharing ideas.

Also of course, you want to refrain from doing such work in a sink/bathtub that you are concerned has cleaning and soap products. To be safe you should use goggles (in case of debris flying into your eye...), do not multitask (in case your scissors or other type of sharps cut you), and do not let your sponge touch your every day materials.

You will notice that my sponges and work materials do not touch the sink. I rested everything on top of the wide metal portion of the reactor.

Children under 18 (or anyone that would typically need a disclaimer) should work under the supervision of a mature adult.

In my opinion a household sponge is not as strong as what I recommend.
The best material to use is Matala, but expensive to purchase just for what we would need. Second is the sponge that comes with the mag 12, or mag 18. If you use the mag sponge you can get 2 pieces out of it if you cut it in half, with a serated bread knife.
Tunicata, I found the Matala, when we meet up again I will replace what you are using.
Also if any one else wants to give it a try pm me, and I can cut some down for you guys.
