Excellent source to control N03 when maintained and used properly but does nothing for P04. I also found that sulfur builds up in the system after prolonged years of use which can affect macro algae growth.
Just my 2 cents and experience.
"I also found that sulfur builds up in the system after prolonged years of use which can affect macro algae growth."

Sorry , but you confuse me !

Works ..."Excellent source to control N03 ".....so how you inspect to grow Macro Algae with NO Nitrate ?!

May builds up Sulfur for many reasons, you need refugium to take in care of effluent .

The huge dif, between Chaetto or Algae Scrumber and Sulfur Filter , Macro Algae is hard to appreciate how much you have to remove to have steady NO3, Nitrate go UP and Down or undetectable , make almost impossible to estimate , how much GFO need to control PO4.

The beauty of Sulfur Filter is steady , lets say 2 to 5 ppm, so easy to have some Rowa to control PO4 ( 0.02 to 0.05 ppm).

Is ALL about balance ( steady) if you have one under control ( Nitrate) is easy to control the Phosphate.

Chaetto , Algae Scrumber are the most aggressive Nitrate remover , hard to balance.

I am SUPER happy , i NEVER have the tank like now.

Only one problem , those lift pumps ( $ 18) sucks , i got 3 but some time one of those stop working , i have to blow the water line, then back in business.
I may try dose pump, i have to figure how much ( mL) is the effluent .

I got brown frags for 2 years ( J.F.) i move around for dif. light intensity , dif. water flow , finally start to color up , just stop grow Macro Algae.

Finally , i finish how to regulate the intake water, i have hard time using small water valves , lift pumps , keep clog , i resolve the issue, i will post after Christmas.
Works very well, easy fix, now ( last 2 months ) i stop using GFO, the key is........STEADY NO3 ( 3 ppm max 5 ppm).
