I noticed today that there are three diffrent types of carpet tape light, indoor/outdoor , and heavy. You said thin so I,m assuming the light is what your talking about but I better wait till I hear from you

The light type will be fine. You don't want it to stick too well.

Also I was not able to find the ethanol/ethly alcohol

You'll be okay without it. It's just to clean the residue sometimes left by the carpet tape. If you're VERY careful, you can use Goo Gone or similar, but you'll want to test it on a piece of scrap first.

Is there a place online that I can order IPS Weldon #40 and #4.

There are a bunch of places.

I've noticed some small leaks/ cracks developing on the acrylic tube that makes up my skimmer auto shutoff device. I bought this skimmer accessory a couple of years

Crazing is caused by internal stress in the plastic, just under the surface. It's one of the ways you can tell well-manufactured products versus cheap ones.

That being said, there are a lot of ways it can occur. Allowing solvent to pool for too long, flame polishing parts before gluing, or using a laser to cut parts near where solvent will be used. Heating parts too much will do it, such as tube ends when prepping them for gluing. Polishing can do it, if the piece gets too hot. Etc. We'll talk more about it during the course.

In your case, it's an aesthetic issue, for the most part. Don't sweat it, as it's not really making the joint weaker.

BTW, you're link didn't work.

Anybody find a source for Weldon without having to buy $50 or more? All the links I've searched here require a minimum order of at least $50?

Thanks.

ONe place I foundd had a minimum of $100, however they are the first place that described Weldon 40 as a two part adhesive - A/B. Is that what we need?

Which suppliers are requiring $50 or more?

Yes, #40 is a polymerizing 2-part cement. It's basically liquid acrylic and a catalyst.

I purchased both the #40 & #4 from http://www.lairdplastics.com/
It cost only about $20 + $8 shipping for both items. Unfortunately there was an additional $25 Hazmat fee. Total ~$50

If you have a Laird Plastics in your area you might be able to save the Hazmat fee. I live in the Baltimore area and these products were not stock items for them.

Wow, sorry about that. I tend to not use Laird, for those reasons. I usually get mine from Piedmont Plastics. They ship it in for me, and there's no HazMat fee. Perhaps this has changed, but I usually order it in sets of three, so maybe they waive it for me. I'm sorry they charged you so much to ship it.

When I tried placing my order online with Laird Plastics, an message popped up and said minimum order was $50. Then I went back and saw this mininum stated at the top of their order form.

SD Plastics apparently has a $75 minimum.

Couldn't find a way to get prices or order online from AIN plastics.

Search at Piedmont Plastics resulted in no finds for either IPS or Weldon.

Reef Central had a thread about buying small quantities that showed up in a internet search, but apparently their server is down for maintenance. Oops. Appars they just got it back up. Here's the thread

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=146032&highlight=Weldon

and the source whom I've jsut sent an email. They do list pint size of #4 and #40. http://www.customacrylic.com/homepage.htm

I'll let you know what they say. I've asked for a quote.

With Piedmont Plastics, there's no online ordering. You have to call, and deal with one of their idiot sales droids. Not the brightest people on earth, and I hate dealing with them. You can also call sign supply places that are local to you. #40 is used for signage, but not very often. You also have to make sure that the stuff is less than 6 months old, and keep it in a refrigerator. Signage places are bad about that. I've gotten it before where it was totally yellow. This probably won't be a problem for what we're doing, as we'll be using very little of it.

FWIW, you can also use a product called PS-30, from another manufacturer. I'm not sure of the name of that company at this time, though.

I tried Piedmont Plastics. They had #40 in the gallon size for ~$80. They didn't have any smaller sizes in stock and were not willing to order any. But, maybe that was just the Rockville, Maryland location. Either way I was going to have to pay shipping and Hazmat fees.
