IMO the intake baffle would *only* be if you used a filter pad which is just silly because that would be filtering out all the critter food in the 'fuge :)
There's nothing inherently wrong with bubbles but a gazillion microbubbles flowing through your tank is a distraction and just not pleasant to look at (unless it's a big surge 8))
Most folks would rather have a baffle before a return to get more bubbles out prior to going back into the tank, that's all. Nothing *wrong* either way.

James

well. as i am waiting for payday to purchase miracle mud, macros....it's not running yet. HOWEVER, i ran it to see flow pressure, and i don't recall a single bubble going into the display tank, so...i think i'm ok.
BTW, my return pump is 300 gph, which i was afraid wasn't going to be enough, but it seems kinda strong!

I am comming back into the reef hobby! I simply love them! Well quite a few things have changed for me as far a my taste and what I want in my tank. I started off looking at the the miricale mudd. I figured since I did not have a clue with what i was doing. I went with their design, I have a four compartment refuge. I have a 55 gal main tank then a ten gallon refuge. This is how this starts. There is a 250 gph pond pump in the top left of my tank, then hard plumd to a t-pipe in the middle of the ten gal. from there it goes through a series of bio-balls through a baffle with three 1.5 inch holes to a 2.5 inch sand base with calerpa. Off of another baffle through more bio balls, then to a holding area with another hard wired line and a 350 gph pond pump back up to an outlet next to a emperor 400 (which will be gone soon). It is decent with way to much maintaince. It is hard to maintain the water level in this system. With having to fidget with the pump flow with a shut off valve. I am setting up a 90 gal they are so much easer to operate with different equip.

Thank you,

thanks for the input.
my setup, although i have put no time into making it look pretty, is quite easy.
i just add water (about a gallon a day) to the fuge and that's that. no valves at all. my overflow tank is only about 1/2"-3/4" underwater, and my return is just under the surface as well. power goes off, and it fills the fuge about 3 inches more than usual then stops. i have no bio-balls either. isn't the live rock/sand supposed to do the work of bio-balls?
however, i do have a mechanical filter i still run and it does have a small amount of porcelain rings in one of the compartments, but it doesn't amount to much (about as much as you could fit in a coffee cup i guess, give or take).
Another point i'd like to mention: that miracle mud had all sorts of crap in it that looked man-made. what appeared to be a piece of BRICK, and some very shiny purple thing, like a purple mirror fragment.
i feel like i have been violated

na..that's the idea....i want to see it..i view it just as much as my display. i am building a new stand to put it under the tank, so it's completely exposed.

lols sounds good there I know all about watching the fuge. My wife catches me sitting beside it watching all the creatures in there. But she does like the idea of being able to close the doors too. Especially at nite when we're watching the TV and the lights from the fuge are on.

i tried running alternate lights...but since it's exposed, it will get light during the day. it will have no dark period. guess it's the only drawback of having it where i have it. but i like it.

oh wow
you did that backwards
you are going to get bubbles into you main tank with your baffles set up like that if you bring water into the left hand side of the tank when it goes to the right it will overflow the right baffle and fall a long ways to your return pump creating bubbles you need to add another baffle. you could get away with it the way it is if you have hardly any flow but then that is not good for a fuge
