Diy sump questions

Hello everyone, I'm converting my current 30 gallon fowlr tank into my sump for the new 90 gal I bought, could I use acrylic panels as the seperators? Also about how much room do I need for the first compartment where water enters the sump? The only function of that compartment is a bubble trap right? Thank you guys very much

If you are using a glass tank as a sump then you should use glass baffles.

You need to plan out the entire sump to decide how large the sections should be. Your drain/s from your tank will empty into that section, so you may want to have room for a filter sock holder at some point. Also depending on the design of the rest of the sump you need to figure out where you might want to place reactors & a heater.

What would make it favorable to use glass rather than acrylic? I'm just asking because I already have the acrylic and dont have a means of cutting glass

I have a 30g glass tank and i used acrylic baffles. Theres no problem with that the first chamber is all up to you. I have my skimmer in there as well so if your going to have your skimmer in there make sure you have the right skimmer water hight for that chamber.

imo i would use glass, you need to know what your running water level is for your skimmer, this will determine the height of your first baffle, second baffle needs to be at least 1" apart, and 1" of the bottom, third baffle i like to make it 1" lower then the first. give me the dimensions of yout 30 gallon tank (inside dimensions) and what kind of skimmer you want to use, and i'll draw something up for you.

yes they will both work. but show me a sump that is a few years old that glass on glass didnt work better.

I have my intake on the right with a filter sock and my skimmer (I like to have the skimmer get first crack at water) then to a bubble trap leading to the center chamber which is my return chamber where I put my heaters, some rubble and a maxijet 1200 which feeds my GFO reactor & Carbon reactor that in turn discharges into the left chamber (Designed to be a fuge in the future (is filled with LR at the moment) with a much lower flow rate) then back into the return chamber Via a 1" bulkhead I installed high up on the partition to keep the water level high. Here is a pic to give you an idea. Also if you have a glass tank you should use glass baffles like KathyC indicated becuase silicon doesn't adhere to acrylic that well which will make the baffle not as strong. Yes, people have success with using acrylic I just don't trust it. Hope this helps.

I have a 20L sump thats 6 years old with 3/4 acrylic baffles that still till this day hold water

Ok every body saying glass explain why he should use glass and not acrylic baffles . What the good side and what the bad because i dont see the difference with the 2. The only thing is with acrylic you can bye a big sheet and cut to the size you want glass i dont think so. So you so callled expertes give a good explanation why we should use one and not the other.

How told you that that BS as long as you have a clean surface area it will bond just as stong as glass . You dont trust acrylic its stronger then glass .

Yes to plastic acrylic is not plastic it a Polycast . Now if you buy acrylic plastic then thats mixed with plastic but can lech Po4 we use only acrylic sheet that are not plastic this is the same acrylic that thay use on nails so that link still doesnt answer my question.
