Drilling the heat sink is the easy part, tapping the threads is tedious as you'll need to clean and oil the tap after each, easy to snap if you're not careful but this is all you'll need after drilling http://www.lowes.com/pd_232566-1083...66++&Ntt=232566++&N=0&langId=-1&storeId=10151

The process of putting grooves into the drilled hole, so that you can screw something into it.

Go to nanotuners and order some of their double sided hex stickers made specifically for applying LEDs to heatsinks. They're cheap and work. Apparently evil uses them on all of his builds and he's a pro. Seems silly, but people like them. I bought a few and will be trying them out myself. No drilling or tapping required. Simply stick. Perhaps an easier way to experiment with LED configuration too.

just buy the 2 part thermo compond its like a glue no drilling and taping just mix and stick and thats it. If a led need to be removed just take a flat head and tap it right off .

I think the thermal compound could be much messier and you also risk damaging the led upon removal.

While thermal compound can be messier odds are you're popping the LED off because it failed so damaging it wouldn't be an issue, the downside is where to mount the new one plus re soldering the wires for that LED.

i used the bherequist pads or whatever they are called from nanotuners(customs?) they worked fine. no drilling or tapping needed.

try ledsupply.com and talk to david best thing about this site is you can talk to them over the phone and rapid led you can just e mail and wait for their e mail to reply and i dont find that easy.
