Anyone pick up one of these lights yet??

Saw one yesterday running and it was blinding...only problem I see is that the day lights and night lights cant be individually controlled with a timer. You need to manually switch between the day/night lights.

Anybody here any reviews?

I've got one BRAND new in box listed in marketplace for sale. Only selling it because It was a present and wife didn't know I have enough metal halide light on a 220 that I don't need it BUT it is BLINDING! I can't believe it. 16 one watt LED and 8 Blue one watt leds. I turned it on and I shouldn't have looked directly at it cause it IS bright! She paid 189 bucks for this at LFS and I'm selling for 90. Anyway, I DID put it on top of my tank just to see how much light it would throw into a 220 and it was amazing. The neat part was it shimmers like a halide AND it runs on only 12 watt transformer. True, downside is there should be a seperate plug for blues and whites. The way it comes it has one plug but the switch allows you to either run all lights, blue & whites together or only blues. Bet if you opened it up one could do a minor re-wire with a seperate plug if that was important to the person using it.

Was this the Double Bright LED or the new Reef LED?

The Reef LED 18" has 18 White and 3 blue led.

The Reef LED I saw was retailing for $300+ for the 18" fixture.

It looks nice but I would want too see the color in real life before I would spend the money. The other LED fixtures on the market have more blue LEDs.

I have a new one which I haven't used, but My brother in law has one on a small tank and it works great. the lights are not made for deep tanks but then again look at the price. on a shallow 15" or less tank this light would be perfect. the corals in this tank are doing good, he has a piece or two of sps , lps and soft corals. control of the blue and white LEDS is done on one switch so dawn dusk function is not possible unless done manually. by the way there are two lights on the market by marineland, the one in question is the reef capable one, it has more led lights.

The problem with these fixtures and no I'm not trying to down play them is that since they're composed of 1w LEDs you'd really only be able to use them in shallow tanks as mentioned above. ANy odd shaped tanks are out and any tank over the fixture's length I believe it's either 24 or 36" is out as well. The fixtures you see out there going for 500-1500 dollars come with 3w LED bulbs and put out significantly more light.

I wasn't aware there was a reef capable model. Mine has 16 white and 8 blue and CAN fit tanks 36 to 48 inches wide. BTW, my 220 tank is 30 inches deep and this unit's light penetrated way down deep. As I said, if you stare at this light directly when turned on it will blind you. Unless you ACTUALLY seen one on you can't really make judgements. My light is 17000 Lumens which is pretty darn much light.

Marineland, is not known for it's quality. It's a cookie cutter company that produces mostly freshwater equipment. It isn't the worst but it isn't anything special either. Their new tank line is cool, compared to other companies, but the quality isn't exactly top notch. I see these LEDs as a "me too" attempt to capture some of the stragglers on the fence about buying LEDs who might not be well informed on the subject. I doubt the LEDS used are even close to the same caliber as any of the real LED companies. Marineland isn't exactly known for their technology and I don't think they started with this fixture.

On another note. The lights may be bright and illuminate the bottom of the tank but that doesn't mean much if it isn't the right kind of light. There are many things to consider when buying a light and for me, this one doesn't check any of the boxes. You're better off saving up or finding a suitable alternative if you want LEDs. This hobby is filled with equipment that looks like what you need, but would be more comfortable being used as a kids party favor, and I would file this in that category. I have taken these out of the box and looked them over but never had the urge to go so far as to plug it in. These are not the fixtures you are looking for.

You kind of lost me on the "real LED company" since most of these "real companies" are selling relabled Chinese imports. The only other fixtures available in this price range are imported from and sold out of someone's garage. Have you noticed how many people are selling identical equipment with a different company name slapped on it?

the appeal of these Marineland units are they are:

1) cheaper than the competition.
2) from a real company who will be around if your equipment breaks.

For the price. I would put it on my frag tank if the color was good. If they went 50/50 on the blue white ratio I would have ordered one by now.

When I say "real LED company" I mean a company who has been building them and actually has numbers and information to back up their product. Marineland is just peddling the same crap all the other companies are to the same people that will buy something just because it says "super" or "double" or "Reef" on it... because if it says "Reef" on it must be good for a reef tank right? I'm not arguing, I'm just saying if you are going to buy something like this, why buy it from a company that mostly produces mediocre products when if you spend a little more you can actually buy something useful the first time instead of spending the money twice? As for the company being around if there is a problem, there are plenty of boutique businesses in this industry that stand behind their products and have great support. Anyone can go out of business, but why buy garbage for the company support? Doesn't make any sense. Would you really buy a mediocre product just because the company is big and should be around if it breaks, when there are plenty of much higher quality products out there??????

As has been discussed in other threads, The LED tech isn't 100% yet and it still needs some work so I'm personally standing back and watching for now, but it is definitely the next step. I just wouldn't waste my money on anything cutting edge from a company like marineland.

I BELIEVE, BEFORE any so called experts give a product any kind of review, negative or positive, that they ACTUALLY TRY the product and give it a test. People are passing judgement on products they've never even held in their hand, let alone tried. That's like saying you DON'T like a person before ever meeting that person. I have NO idea whether this light is GOOD, BAD or IN BETWEEN since I've NEVER even seen the Reef model.
When Hyundai first came to United States they were the brunt of every joke, and deservedly so, but NOW they are garnering all kinds of awards such as J.D. Power and Consumer Reports.

Remember, LED is a BRAND new technology as far as reef tanks are concerned. As each day passes the prices will begin to come down and the technology will slowly get better for less money so it quite POSSIBLE that Marineland, who has been in business for decades, has come up with a very decent light at a fair price. I don;t know, but I'm not going to BASH a product on a forum without ever trying it. That's ridiculous.

I just said I've handled it, this is sort of my job... I'm not bashing the product. It doesn't make any difference to me whether you buy it or not. The fact that a company has been doing business for decades says nothing to the quality of their product or services, just that they understand business. PFO first introduced the Solaris in 06, almost 5 years ago. We're a little beyond early adopters now and it isn't so new that we don't have hundreds of companies to choose from. Marineland just isn't a great company for marine equipment, have you seen their sumps? Their technology is lagging just a little bit. They are clearly not an authority on anything reef related so why would you assume their LED offering is anything different? It's really just a glorified moonlight array at 1w each. But if you think Marineland is the next Hyundai "cinderella story" maybe you should buy one and do a write up on it. My post wasn't a review of the product, I was merely pointing out that Marineland isn't exactly the company I would buy an LED fixture from for obvious reasons.

I see and handle enough new products every month to know that 90% of what comes out of the pipe is just crap, and that's generous. There is very little of real value coming from the mass production houses for the reef set.

As far as a better offering, I wouldn't endorse any one company since I've only seen a handful of fixtures and some look like they were put together in a shop class and others were probably built in a garage but don't look like it at all. It's like anything else, go out see some fixtures, read the review blogs, read the forums and you can get a general picture of which companies are doing it right and who to stay away from.

Also, Waynotcars if you want to shout you can go louder than caps and bold. SEE, I'M SHOUTING NOW WHICH MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I HAVE A POINT GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reefbuilders did a review on it and even took some real data. It got pretty decent review other than the comment on it being less blue than other fixtures.

You are comparing a $200 fixture to other $600+ fixtures. Of course there will be a difference but its silly to say the cheap one is not any good These fixtures fill a void in the market right now and the numbers are definitely good enough for shallow tanks...

a par of 130 at 12" and only directly under the fixture is nothing compared to some of the units out there. That's less than 1/2 of a good 54w HO T5 like Geissman or ATI, etc. If you look at the big picture, you spend $200 on this and end up spending $600 on the real deal when you discover that this isn't exactly what you had hoped for. You could spend 1/2 that for a small tank and get a good T5 fixture that actually would be reef capable.
