I was saying 1/2 of the total for the lights. But even 1/2 of the $600 and you can get a good light setup for a small tank. The minimum only gets you so far and rebuying equipment when you realize that you need more can get expensive. Sometimes things are cheap for a good reason.

Well that's the decisions I'm facing now on my frag tank lighting.

$300 for a decent T5 HO fixture

$230 for the marineland led (plenty of light for 12" high tank.

The marineland LED uses less electricity, doesn't require annual bulb replacement, cheaper up front cost, enough light for 12" high frag tank.

Like I said, if it had more blue I'd jump on it. Still considering getting on and adding a stunner strip or 2 to get the color right.

then adding another $100 for the stunner or so and your over 300 into it cheaper to just get the maxspect unit that will definately handle it or a t5 retro

The maxspect is $429

Retro is not an option I need a fixture

Plus the maxspect is only 16" long. it is on my list but not sure if it will give me light on the ends of my 30x12x12 tank.

they have three dif models

single,double,and reef ones..

absolute fish had them running on a few tanks

This is where i'd seen it running...they had the Reef and Double Bright side by side. Noticable difference between the two...and yes they were throwing alot of light but they like a few people have said..they had them on 10 gallon nanos..

One of my concerns is that the small size of the fixture would leave alot of dead spots or shadows in the areas not directly under the light.

Wes, are you planning on using the frag tank as a grow out or just for storage? I think that's the question you need to answer to help you decide on a fixture. If it's just to maintain the pieces temporarily until you sell them than you can go with something with less output.

There is a swap here a few times a year so I'll most likely accumulate some frags and leave them in the frag tank a while to grow out before I sell them at the swaps.

I'm most likely going to go with a tek 4 x 24w fixture but considering alternative options with LED.

I'm also considering 3 of the BoostLED Par30 bulbs in a track lighting fixture above the frag tank. The only problem with this option is the light is less portable to take with me for my frag swap set-up.

You can always build a small box to house the track for the swaps. I don't know how big your swap setup is but if you're making enough money it might be worth it to have a light for growth and another to show the corals at the swaps.

It's a 20g long also.

I bought two. One to plumb to my system and one goes in the closet and gets carried to swaps.

So I have had this light for a month (reef capable 24-36''), and I love it. Everything is growing, macros, corals, acans, acro, duncan. I have nothing to compare it to considering this was my first light other than t8's. Honestly, this light is almost too bright! I love it. Going to get another. Not exactly cool to the touch, but does not seem to heat up my tank. Totally recommended, don?t worry, make the jump! The 24-36' was like $200. Well worth it!
