Will one 12" unit light a 24" x 24" cube? Manufacturers told me yes on the phone, but a friend is saying no. Anyone with experience? with that footprint or just a 24" wide tank?

One unit will light that tank, however you have raise the unit higher higher than the legs allow. you would have to hang them using the hanging kit.

On my tank which is 48' x 36' x 27' ,I have two units hung at 15" from the water line and they provide good coverage. I also have my units at W66 , B68, R68 percentage.

I am also planning on adding one unit on a marineland 45 cube, which is 24" x 24"

Are the edges and corners of the tank dark if you were to have it at the height of the legs?

Will you will hang the light for the 45 cube as high? Do they make a hanging arm type setup or do you have to buy the ceiling mounted one?

I will try the the legs first because they come with the rails but if it does not provide the coverage I want I will raise it about 15" also. I had my brother make me two light trees from electrical conduit pipe, which work great. I will try and post a pic later.

Take a look at this thread for ideas on brightness:

Pics would be great of that conduit pipe, i am trying to think of ideas to raise it up without hanging from the ceiling or wall.

Show me 3 (different units) pictures of DIY LED's that look good.

I Think we have different needs. I do not want any cords anywhere, but since that is not possible, I will have 2 from my AI LED and 1 from my Vortech. But that is it. You will not see any other cords from my tank. Please keep in mind I am crazy, and the look of something is very important to me, perhaps you do not feel this way, which is why I went with the AI LED.

Didn't mean to HJ the thread but doing a Pro looking LED is certainly within the realm of a few people. For those of us whose pockets don't go to our ankles this is an alternative. For those that can afford the AI's that's awesome and if I could they'd be hanging over my 65 Lol. But such is not the case.

dont want to hang mine from the ceiling either. do the rails come with legs? my canopy is about 7" high, but if it hangs under the rails and the rails sit on the canopy it would end up at water level. How high to the legs raise the rails? would they essentially be equal in height to the units in that the bottom would end up being 7" above the water? is that still going to be too close?
Also, how sensitive are these to salt spray? the glass of my MH fixture tends to get splattered every now and then from over eager fish at feeding. is there some protective cover that is fairly easy to wipe clean?

Are these difficult to hang? i wouldnt trust doing it myself and would probably rather get someone who know what they are doing hang it, i just worry that it might not look so nice.

That is an excellent idea, thanks for posting the pics.

Looks good! Do you get a large glare to the sides of the unit in the other parts of the room with it being that high?

Because of the angle of the led lights the glare is to a minimum. Much less light than with my previous MH or T5 setup. Actually if you look you'll be able to see how much light glare there is in the sides.
