So i picked up my blue spotted jawfish today around 8pm from Will. He was in the same bag from shipment. Probably in the bag over 24 hours. ;/

After driving home from wills place in traffic for over 2 Hrs i finally got him in my tank. I placed the bag on in the water to allow the temperature to acclimate when i noticed he started opening his mouth at the surface like he was gasping for air? was opening it over and over... not sure if he was doing this in the travel home but i thought maybe it was time to open the bag...it was pretty deploded and the water looked very polluted...

i moved my small tank beside my tank to put him inside so i could set a drip line and i proceeded to cut the bag at the top since it had a metal style clamp holding the bag shut. AS SOON AS I CUT THe top of the bag the fish jumped out of the bag. I SWEAR he jumped at least 3 feet in the air and i had no idea where he went.

i looked everywhere because i didn't hear a splash and i figured he cleared the tank and fell behind it.

Well i was wrong, he landed in the rear chamber of my solana where i have my fuge and then when he seen me he jumped out of that and jumped in the Direct tank and disappeared.

i couldnt make this up lol, he obviously wasn't acclimated at all.

i came home from dinner an there is sand on some of the rocks that wasn't there earlier. i grabbed a flashlight and i found him in a hole he made .

thank god lol

wow, what a tale telling. it is quite scary when I read "don't know where is land" then follwing " jump into the DT" no acclimate. that is scary.

I will pick my up tomorrow at noon time. can not wait :)

good luck and post his picture

lucky you! haha im jealous. i have tried a dusky jaw, two pearly jaws and a tiger jaw and everyone i got was also on top of the tank doing the same thing and a few days later they either jumped out or did not make it. if i could keep one actually in the tank id get one. i have not had a dead fish in two years but when it comes to jaws, forget about it. good luck though man! im jealous

Jawfish are hardy and HUGE jumpers...but be cautious of salinity issue...the one thing that IMHO that they cannot recoup from is extreme high or low salinity changes...I saw this first hand in my buddies tank...we both were freakin out like crazy...apparently his refractometer was totally off...after his large water change (which in essence should be good)...high BSJF started moltin with this gross slime and looked just pitiful!...It was aweful to watch...he thought he was doing the right thing to help his tank...BSJF didnt make it...so FYI please double check your refractometer BEFORE you do a water change...Just a single experience that went wrong that I hope helps others to double think!

This story is hilarious because it has a happy ending, it wouldn't have been quite so funny if he had went carpet surfing like my pearly jawfish did years ago... that was my favorite. When I get back from my trip Will is ordering me one too. Make sure you don't forget to make that cover on Sunday!:groupflip

visit nanoreef - theres an instruction on how to make a better home for them. Basically, its pvc tunneling under the sand and a barnacle shell on top. Its the cleanest looking thing ever, very awesome. This way he won't mess up the sand so much.

heres a video. what a cool fish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFKuSIvrXZ8

im going to check out that article and definitely make him something - does anyone know where to get good mesh for the top? id rather keep away from the glass. the temp has went from around 78.0 to 78.6 ish ...seems like its rising...

[ just so everyone knows the yellow tang was taken from someone who broke down there tank. I cant get her out. I tried one day and she ripped herself apart on the rocks and scratched her eye. and the eye later became cloudy. Shes still re-cooperating and as soon as i can get her out i will. just really dont want to stress her out any more than i already have. im going to try to not feed for a few days once the jawfish gets settled in and put a big net and a stocking with food in it [thanks for the idea awibrandy]. also going to pick up a trap from a member. .]

some more shots,

he has shot sand everywhere building dens lol...i think hes finally done lolol...

HE ! TOOK ! my ked red frag right off of the rock and used it to finish off his den. what a !

He seems to eat anything i throw in the tank but then will later spit it out. I watched him spit out a worm looking thing? maybe found in sand not sure...then he ate flakes and later spit them up. same with pellets and rods formula...

maybe he isn't use to frozen food yet..

well just have to wait and see i guess
