Yes it does as there may be gas pockets that built up in your substrate. The malaysian trumpet snails burrow under the sand preventing such gas pocket build up. You can start up with maybe 5-10 pcs. They do multiply relatively fast (just don't overfeed tank to keep them in check)

IDK if a pleco is really going to do much with the sand. It will hit up the glass and may eat the driftwood too.

Thanks Howze so any suggestions for the sand? My glass needs cleaning it has hard green spots on it

Pleco wont do any good if you want to help stir up the substrate.
