And for today's edition, something completely different: VIDEO! :D

Had to put them on YouTube, don't know anywhere else for video hosting...

[I've noticed YouTube has some display issues; there are four videos of this tank. If you see less, or none at all, hit refresh on your browser window.]

The pair do that all the time, just got lucky and caught one of'em doing it on video. They like to spawn underneath the lawn, and they've dug quite a few tunnels through the root network.

Lovely, simply lovely (sigh)

Glad you like it :)

Just kind of hit me, "Hey, wait, doesn't my camera have a video feature? Hmmm...."

One thing it let me do was capture one of the pseudomogil's displaying. Tried getting that in a picture and missed it about three or four hundred times.

What I love is how big the tank looks! The illusion of "space" is wonderful.

Now that the flurry of photography is over with, here's a more general update on a few things.

Cladophora. It's starting to make a comeback. I had stopped dosing the elevated levels of excel after I had beaten it down, and that seems to have given it a chance to get a foothold again. So tonight I start dosing high levels of excel again.

Also on the not so positive side, the killfish are proving to be very rough on the HC. All their burrowing activity is really starting to pull up patches of HC. It's rooted fairly well, for HC, so nothing has floated away yet - but I'm going to have to go in with some tweezers and try to replant some of it. I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with the situation long term. I love the HC and I love the killfish, so choosing between them is not something I want to do.

Otherwise the tank is running fine.

I also never followed up on reporting on that photo book of the tank I put together through snapfish. I did receive it, and it's great. I really, really recommend anyone with a tank do one of these books - they're peachy keen.

Sure....
15g tank & iron stand $60
eheim 2213 $60
2 x 48w t5 Nova Extreme fixtures $125
ADA advance system 72 CO2 deluxe $200
ADA solenoid valve $75
ADA substrates $50
hydor eth heather $40
ADA drop checker $30

That's about $650 right there, but it doesn't need to be that high. There are cheaper alternatives to all the ADA products that work just as well (except for the soil, which is really great stuff), the in-line heater is a luxury, the eheim is overkill.

I also went and later spent cash upgrading both my bubble counter and diffuser, dropped about $200 on those two items. Entry level ADA versions were included with the CO2 system, though, so there wasn't any real need I just wanted to.

There's about $200 worth of livestock in the tank, counting both the fish and the plants.

On-going cost is electricity (not much), food, Co2 cans (about $11 every nine weeks). My initial fertilizer supply will likely last me for years.

I mentioned a few posts ago that the killifish were being very rough on the HC. That just seems to be getting worse over time, so I've been investigating other carpet plants as possible replacement candidates for the HC if it becomes neccessary. HC has two real drawbacks in this situation; it's naturally bouyant and it's root system isn't deep at all.

Think I may have found an option that would be worth going with, if I have to switch out the HC at some point. Take a look at utricularia, a carnivorous bog plant used as a lawn in the tank in the photo below. Mind you, I don't want to have to replace the HC. This is just what I'm thinking of as my 'Plan B' if the killifish leave me with little choice.

Ooooh. I wonder what utric that is? Wonderful things the bladderworts. They spread like no-one's business and have ingenious little traps underground for miniscule creatures - they literally get sucked in when the guard hairs are triggered. I assume a fully submersible form?

Yup, fully submersible. That species is going under the name u. graminofolia, though I wouldn't bet money on it being a firm ID. Tropica has been growing it for a couple years now. Supposed to be a little touchy and requires some acclimitization time when introduced to a new tank, but is much more temperature tolerant than most of it's relatives.

I think it'll make a pretty decent Plan B if it comes to that.
