It was very interesting today at Nerac. Various speakers such as Anthony Calfo, Julian Sprung, Tullio Del Aquila, Ron Hessing, Sallie Boggs, and Todd Gardner were all speakers there today and in continuation for tomorrow. Anthony spoke about coral propagation in the more specific prospects of coral farming. Julian Sprung spoke about basically "OLD TANK SYNDROME." Tullio spoke to us about the use of LED lighting, TO WHAT I BELIEVE will REVOLUTIONZIE the reef aquaria as we know it. I'll get into more specifics if you gusy want to know. Ron Hessing I'm not sure what he spoke about i missed his presenation (didnt go to this one yet). Sallie Boggs spoke about the how marine fishes reproduce and the way to care for them. Todd Gardner spoke about sea horses (didnt go to this one yet.)

THEY HAD SICK dry fiji rock $2.00/pound i picked up 32 pounds very beautiful huge pieces i really love em.

I picked up a beautiful sump from an awesome local reefer.

They had the maxijet modifications in my point of view was extremely expensive. The corals there were also very expensive in my point of view. It was very awesome to see them set up their prop tanks.

What really made me go wah was when they had a beta version of the Vortech up and running. The guy had gotten water on it and it just killed the Vortech.... um wat the heck :\?

Reef exotics brought so much stuff to the conference great seeing tony there. And there are great raffles for tomorrow to auction off. I cant wait to see the rest and hopefully win a raffle :)

Lmk what u guys want me to expand on everything is just truely amazing. i loved it.

the rock thr was nice i bought 22lbs for my upgrade, personally, although i did not take advantage of the discussions, it was very unimpressive...it was so much so that pics would be a waste

Hey guys,
I was lucky enough to go to the conference yesterday as well. :) I heard three speakers, Tullio Del Aquila, Jullian Sprung, and Anthony Calfo.
Tullio spoke about what he specialized in, lighting. It was very interesting to hear him talk about the products that he developed for icecap, such as halide pendants and reflectors. The main point of his presentation, though, was to talk about LEDS. They are the next reef lighting solution. Tullio said that we are not that far away from using LEDS for the general reef application. He mentioned that soon, a single 3 watt LED will have the same output of about 50 watts of metal halide. Also, they will be fully customizable, and changeable. For instance, you might be able to change the kelvin rating on each individual LED to achieve the right color you want. The possiblities seem endless.
Next, we heard Jullian Sprung talk about, as mentioned before, "Old Tank Sydrome". His presentation was also very interesting, and he explained the many factors that may cause your reef to collapse. Also, he explained that your tank might become immune to a certain coral species, for unknown reasons. What really sparked my interest was that he seemed to be a big supporter of sand beds versus bare bottom. He mentioned that either will work, but you need more biological filtration with a bare bottom to help with the nitrification process.
Lastly, we saw Anthony Calfo ,who had an excellent presentation. Basicly, he explained the best techniques of propogation, and optimizing growth. His main point was that, everyone should be aquaculturing some type of coral to help the hobby. More aquacultured corals = less demand for wild caught corals. Plus, if our hobby is totally cut off from WC corals, we havn't seen expensive. Calfo explained that propogation could really be profitable. If you aquaculture xenia, he said, in the masses, you can sell to a wholesaler for $6 a stalk maybe. Say you propogate 500 a year...you do the math. It would be nice to recieve a $3000 dollar check for propogating such an easy coral.

I had alot of fun at the convention, and I actually walked away with a luminarc III from reefexotics....:D

Very interesting Aaron. I'm very intrigued by the prospects of the LED's.

That Vortech mishap is a major malfunction.....especially happening at NERAC, a huge NYC metropolitan venue. The implications of that are tremendous.

i would love to see a tiny led kick up 50 watts comparable to the mh bulbs.. figure the size of em you would need a ton of them all over the top of the tank...

Actually Tony you'd only need 12 LED's (at 50w per 3) to make it to 250w. I use these lights for my moonlights and they include 3 LED's (supposedly will be equivalent to 50w), so only four of these would be needed to attain 250w, they are the size of a silver dollar coin:

White or variable spectrum possibly available when these are marketed for reef use:

Here's the link to the site for these. They are real easy to use.

Goto 'other products' and click 'LED Light Fixtures & Strobes', then scroll down to see the various LED's:

Oops...I guess I didn't hear Tullio properly. According to what my brother heard, a 3 watt LED is comparable to 20 watts of halide.

Still...that's pretty damn good.

How would you power these up? They seem to be unattached to any source of power, i.e. you need to wire them up yourself.

I wonder what the superwhite puts out in terms of light quality, for the savings in electricity these would be fantastic.

There is some interesting reading here regarding the LEDs. Looks like you can plug them in to a medium based bulb to power them.

Interesting reading Joe. I did not attend NERAC, but without hearing the presentation, I'd think that some new LED technology might be in the works. Either that or possibly some new lenses that increase spread and possibly penetration (damn, that sounds like fun :division: ), lol.
