First, Ich is a parasite, not bacteria. Second, in the wild fish are attacked by ich, and other parasites too, and are able to fight it off by a number of things, one being having a strong immune system. Most of these products, which don't kill the ich but rather do a couple of things. One being building up the fish immune system, which lets it fight off the ich, the other is putting a strong slime coating on the fish, so the ich can't get through or, in the case of garlic, the ich doesn't like the taste and wouldn't reattach. The problem with the skin thing is that ich attacks the gills, eyes, and mouth so the ich can attack the fish again. These products don't work and in the case where they seem to, it was probably something else and not the product.

Here is some good reading.

Though I guess if you are still running a usual amount of carbon it would prob be fine since the carbon is supposed to remove that once you're done medicating...idk I would still be careful plus you want to know which medication did the job instead of using multiple and never really knowing what got rid of the ich

That is why I always say add garlic to their food, it deff helps them out and is all natural. Works for humans, so it should work for our fish as well. Just my $.02

Gave the tank a second dosage today, and I'm very happy to find the corals open and no visual signs of stress, everything from corals, to fishes, shrimps, etc, looks like I haven't even add anything :) I also noticed that alot of the "white" dots are off from the fishes like for example the powder blue had it all over the face, and so was the purple tang, their appetite is still good, and I followed the advise of some of you guys to stop the metronidazole, and switched to garlic. My plans are to change 300 gallons of water in a two week period when this is all done.

Please do keep in mind that are the trophants (the Ich cysts that were what you could see on the fishes) drop off the fish, it does not mean that Ich is gone, it means it is now multiplying in/on your substrate and will be looking to reattach to your fish in the future.

As already mentioned..Herbtana does not kill the ich parasite, it only irritates the skin of the fish so it is less likely to reattach. Far from a guarantee :(

3RD day of treatment corals still looking good :) no visual stress, I know ich is far from gone but I am noticing less "scratching" against the rocks, most of the fish where doing it and the ones that was doing it, where swimming really fast and scratching alot against the rock.Today the swimming is more calm and I see random scratching here and there, I'm sitting a good 45 to 60 minutes twice a day in front of the tank just to see their behavior. Also know that the day I saw two of the fishes "scratching" agains the rock, I did the google search and was doing this treatment the next day, so I think the earlier you start the less the infestation, the better the chances of you not loosing any fish.

(I'm uploading a video of the tank in a few)

So, the stuff says you dose for 10 days, but the ich life cycle is a lot longer than that, correct? That's why you take all fish from the tank for 8-10 WEEKS?

Just an observation. I agree with Marrone and KC.

4th day of treatment and all looks good (corals, clams, fish, shrimps,) I don't see any white spots (I know that's not the ich) I'm testing the water parameters every day (since I have the skimmers off for so long now) and ALL is good, even my phosphate is zero :) one thing I still don't understand are my recordias, I dont know if it is the Herbtana or what, but they're huge !! even in my refugium all the macro algae looks good also, I'm very happy so far haven't lost anything.

You can't add Herbtana to the tank and then say with 100% certainty that it worked (or didn't), unless you were monitoring the parasite population during treatment. There are too many variables to single out the meds. We tested Herbtana before it was released, when I was still at Total Aquariums and from what we observed it seemed to work most of the time. That is purely anecdotal though and could be coincidental, we'll never know. We also overdosed it a few times as part of the testing and there were never any noticeable changes in corals or inverts. As for reef safe ich meds Herbtana is the only one I would feel comfortable selling to a customer only because we worked with it and of all the meds that claim to work it was the only one that seemed to actually work.

The flip side of that is, most of the time, healthy fish don't really get ich and definitely not to the point of infestation. If you have a serious enough ich problem where you feel you have to medicate it than odds are you have other problems with water quality or diet.

I disagree with that based on my situation, my water parameters are what you could say "prestine" and the only reason I got ich (which is a first one for me in the 5 + yrs of reef keeping) was the minute I intruduced the powder blue tang :( which I only blame me for not having a QT. Which is gonna change when this is over.
