In the midst of the pre-swap, frag ogling frenzy, it often gets over-looked that the Swap is an opportunity to do much more than trade and buy corals. We make every effort to make your experience an educational one by presenting demos or workshops throughout the day. We also bring in world class speakers to help you hone your reef keeping skills.

For those of you who didn't have the chance to attend MACNA in Dallas this year we have you covered! Fresh off their standing room only MACNA presentations, Sanjay Joshi and Paul Whitby will reprise these very same talks that were widely regarded as among the best the conference had to offer.

Lighting and Aquascaping--two topics of critical interest to all reef keepers at all levels.

Sanjay Joshi

Reef Lighting: Myths, Legends, Folklore and Science

Sanjay Joshi in real life is a Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State University. He has been a reef addict since 1992, and currently keeps several reefs aquariums at home including a 500G SPS dominated reef. He also co-manages the 500G aquarium at Penn State. He has published several articles in magazines such as Reefs Magazine, Marine Fish and Reef Annual, Aquarium Frontiers, Aquarium Fish, and Advanced Aquarist. In addition he has been an invited speaker at numerous marine aquarium society meetings in the US and Europe and is widely regarded as the leading expert on aquarium lighting in the country.. He received the MASNA award in 2006, for his contributions to the marine aquarium hobby.

If you want to know the unbiased truth about aquarium lighting, don't miss this presentation!

Paul Whitby

Aesthetics of Aquascaping

Paul is the current President of the Central Oklahoma Marine Aquarium Society
(COMAS) and has had several articles published in Reef Keeping online magazine and Reefs Magazine. He has published several reviews and articles on COMAS, the development of a captive propagation program to conserve coral species, as well as numerous reviews.

In October 2007 his SPS dominated display tank was selected as Reef Keeping
Magazine?s Tank of the Month. Paul has presented several marine aquarium related seminars at local clubs and conferences including Oklahoma?s CRASE and Arkansas? Reef Fest conferences, MACNA IMAC west and others.

He has been keeping saltwater aquariums for over 20 years and has owned a variety of tanks ranging from under 30 to in excess of 600 gallons. His current system, including filtration, is over 1,000 gallons.

His series of articles in Reefs Magazine on the Aesthetics of Aquascaping form the basis of this talk. Aquascaping doesn't have to be a mysterious and random endeavor. Find out how to 'scape with intention and purpose.

See you all there.

Not taking anything away from the stellar presentations from Sanjay and Paul, who are 2 of the best of the best in my opinion the 3rd speaker(s) don't need to say a word to get and hold your attention. They would be Randy's tanks at Pratt. You will drool over them whether you have seen them before or not!

Both speakers were great. Paul's talk was MUCH, MUCH better than I was expecting.

Paul- I would love to get my hands on your power point presentation. Not to use, but to go over the information again!

Best,

Alfred

I just wanna say thank you all very much for the invitation to this wonderful event. I brought my wife and daughter along and they both loved it. I was amazed by the prices and the selections available, beautiful corals. I also want to thank Dr. Mac for giving me two really nice frags for nothing. He heard me explaining that we had lost power for 12 days after Sandy struck this area, I wanted to know how to acclimate everything after the disaster my tank went through once it hit 36 degrees. He explained that things should be fine, and acclimate as you normally would now that the tank is back up to temperature and parameters are correct, that was a relief to know and hear, but he asked me behind his booth to pick a couple frags. I was surprised by this gesture and it's very much appreciated. Again thanks to everyone that was at this meet, I met some and saw alot of others, wished I could have met and spoke to you all, great group today, thanks for everything

I didn't have the pleasure to see Dr. Sanjay's presentation, as I got there late. I'm sure it was superb though as I've read and seen Dr. Sanjay's work before.

I was fortunate enough to be able to sit in for Dr. Paul Whitby's talk and I can say with complete confidence that it was utterly fascinating. My mind was blown up. :) As I said to Dr. Paul afterwards - who apologized for going a few minutes over! - I could listen to him talk about aquascaping for hours and hours. Apologize!? PFFT. Continue please sir and don't stop. I also said I want to tear down my aquascape and re-do it...but I won't. I'll just get a bigger tank :)

Thank you so much! Come back again, PLEASE!

+1 Dr. Pauls lecturing was great! Now I want to upgrade and start over with a color wheel and the 5/3 rule. And make sure my wife is there to help. Since men suck at aquascaping!

If anyone has any questions on any of the aspects I touched on, I would be happy to try and elaborate.

I also wanted to say thankyou for the great hospitality. I had a really fun time at the swap.

Paul.
