If you use an external overflow box you don't have to drill the tank. I don't use one, but from what I hear can be kinda noisy. Drilling the tank is probably the best way IMO. I'm sure someone on here can do it fairly inexpensive for you. Bulkheads and plumbing fittings are pretty easy to come by as well. I found this info with diagrams online, it has some pretty neat info that may simplify how sumps and overflows work.

You can gut the canister filter and fill with live rock and use for circulation but yes its a nitrate factory. I use a eshopps PK100 hang on works great but my neck broke on it. I called them and they sent new one good service mean while I epoxy the old one and haven't used new one. Reinforce those necks who ever has one. Just sand with sand paper gently then add your epoxy on outside that wil reinforce it. Or use acrylic glue ..good luck..

But since I'm here let help.. The canister filter you could gut out and fill with live rock or dead corals good calcium otherwise its a nitrate factory as mentioned but good for flow.. Also I have an eshopps skimmer pk 100 you will need bigger one always get double rating . The necks on the eshopp broke on me . Called they sent new great service . I sanded neck from broken one epoxy and works fine . The new one I did before it broke have for spare. Good luck.

No not for sump just to circulate and filter with rock inside...

Most important part is your skimmer and water testing...double up on your skimmer ..so 90 get like 150 to 200 rated skimmer you will be fine.

Its not practical but I guess you could use the suction from the canister in sump to draw water then discharge into display..

Hopefully you have a floor drain some where . Lol.

Also a check valve on return not bad idea..that will stop return water from siphoning into sump.. Or some people drill a hole to break siphon..

Good luck post pictures and people will help you . Also readdddd a lot.

As mentioned earlier, you can use an external overflow box to drain into the sump, don't use the canister filter. It almost impossible to get the canister to drain at the dame rate ad the return pump pushing back up. You need to use gravity as the drain

Its not the right way but you could it all depends on your budget.. If the budget is there then drill tank and pipe in with valves etc. I send you a diagram if I get a chance but you can google on line type reef sump diagram that should get you something. I m actually doing a new build and drilling bottom of tank and puttting discharge and return in center so tank will be clean on all sides.. 30x 30 x 30 cube plus sump... Just waiting on final approval from boss. Lol
