Something in my tank blew up!!

I woke up just now and smelled and see smoke. So I quickly went around the house looking for the cause. I checked to appliances first, then I noticed that my tank is quiet so that means the circuit must of blew which did. I didn't smell any burning from the main tank area, so I unplugged everything and popped the circuit back on. Slowly I replugged everything and everything started working.

The real cause of the smell was my new setup next to my main tank...something must of blew up when Coned turned the power back on and nuked the tank while shorting the circuit. I have never seen this, the water is grey and black...I cutoff all power to that tank and will throw out the heater as well as the powerhead.

What I'm most upset about is that I was holding 4 nice fish for a Member and I was not able to help them out during their tough times but to bring him more bad news.

Please keep an eye out for tree cutters in your area...at anytime they will cut your power off and that surge when they turn it back on can really damage your equipment...

Now to get rid of the smell and the water! Just sucks.

is the burnt (black stuff) floating in the water siicon from the tank? I have a rimless deepblue 30g. Nothing in my tank has that rubbery texture? Other equip was a Steath 150W heater, a maxijet 800, and a nano skimmer...my hand still smells after touching the water.

damn, i was unaware of it. I've been using it for my qt and lr holding bins.

the heater is still wholely intacted, no signes of damage...just wondering where the black stuff came from. the only black is the silicon on the tank; it's kind hard to wipe off the glass too. Tank smells like burnt rubber.

where flushing u live by? i am in flushing also and i still don"t have power yet

i never lost power, until this morning. Stupid people never notifies people about turning off electricity. It's gotta be common-courtesy by notifying right? Same thing happened last year when they removed a tree nearby and knocked out my pump causing a backflow into the sump.

could be from maxijet, but not if it still works. the epoxy around motor gives off a terrible burnt smell when they shot out. i would give it a sniff anyway.

it's either or...now the tough part is to clean the tank...the residue left behind is silicon I believe. When I wipe it smudges on the glass...such a pain. I feel like chucking it out the window.

How could u be unaware of that? lol I been seeing that thread for years already. It was a certain model so it might not be the case but sounds liek it definitely could be. If you google it you will get more info there is also a thread here I think it has the model # as well. A bunch of people had problems with them. I have 1 in my fw tank for about 5 years with no problems I guess mine was before the bad one came out. Sorry about your loss and definitely check that out and see if that was the model that was recalled. Worst case scenario you at least get a free replacement heater. It won't bring your livestock back but it's better than nothing.
