I have Painted rear wall with reg behr paint from hd with a roller and another with krylon spray paint. I felt like i have more control with roller, took a few extra coats but can be done indoors easier than spray if thats a factor.
I used a very dark blue behr paint on one tank, came out very nice

If I was you buy background already black or colored. They sell stuff that makes it shiny or wet look like its painted. Because if you get tired or don't like it it's easy to removed. If you can't find the stuff. You can use baby oil on shiny paper that will make it look painted. But if like paint any spray paint brand from Home Depot. Same for roller paint. Don't use oil paint.

If you take your time black vinyl is the way to go. Paint is a pain to remove and even harder if the tanks set up.

Black background tanks look closed into me unless you have a lot of depth or "visual depth".

I used black paint but it all peeled off before I could instal the tank.
I switched to the darkest limo tint I could find. Much easier and cleaner.
My last tank was painted black and it chipped, that was a huge PIA to repaint.

Big fan of limo tint going forward
