There are varying degrees of protection. Any species of plant or animal who's collection is illegal is obviously a protected species. They do not have to be "endangered". For example, all wildflowers in NY state, and many other states, are protected. In other words, you cannot legally collect them. Some of these plants are critically endangered, some are actually common. But they are all protected. Aside from that, after I graduated college, before I went to grad school, I briefly worked at the old Al's Aquarium on Nostrand Ave in Brooklyn. They had a turtle, I forget what kind, maybe a hawksbill...a juvenile, about 20" long. Not for sale...But it was really pathetic seeing it splash back and forth in that pathetically small (for the turtle's size) store tank. But it ate like a pig...totally ripping into the goldfish we gave it.
