I got myself a used rimless 180gal tank last September. Dimension: 72x24x24.

Last night I noticed that the back and front is "bowing" which makes we worried. As a matter of fact sleepless night.

Do I need to worry about this? Or this is normal for a rimless tank? Can I do something to fix this "bowing". Any ideas, help!!!

You need to put a Euro brace on those top edges atleast 2" wide along all sides. that way it still has a nice clean look and you won't need to have the typical brace that most tanks have on them. That tank wasn't manufactured without a rim. If someone built it themselves, they didn't bother studying up very well hehe. , just my .02

I'm routing for you bro. I really am.

Look....i'm sure your wife is up your a$$ with this whole tank thing. We've all been there. I think if you word it properly and start the conversation with flowers and end it with chocolate you could end up with a new tank. Max Reefs has a 180 they are looking to sell. Why not get a price from them on the tank. It can't be that much.

I'm having difficulties figuring out how this bracing is going to do anything. There is nothing sucking the middle of the tank in. It's just one long 6' strip butt jointed to another 2' strip. First thing to give is going to be the seam where the two meet and you'll be back to the beginning. I would think a Eurobrace is a single piece of acrylic placed on the top of the tank and the opening or openings are routed out.

I'm afraid this thread ends with a call to the insurance company.......but I've always cheered for the underdog!

This is the same concept as a header in your home. As long as the silicone cures properly, the 2" width is the straight edge and it's very strong. I personally wouldn't have kept any water in the tank alone being saltwater, while making this attempt, so I hope this works out okay. This stuff takes extreme patience, it's not an overnight fix contrary to belief.

Let's hope that money is all that is spent in this whole ordeal. Hopefully no one gets hurt (a VALID concern at this point). I wouldn't personally trust this tank even if someone who KNEW what they were doing was applying a Euro Brace.

under10minutes made a great suggestion.. talk with Max Reefs and see what they'll sell it to you for.

I'm done with this thread....

Absolutely correct. Only difference I see is that he put the euro bracing inside the tank as opposed to on top of the tank. It should have, and would be MUCH more structurally sound, if it were siliconed on top of the tank.

I agree with Kathy C. This 'fix' is not something I'd chance in my home.
