I have a 120g reef with a lot of SPS and clams. My calcium needs are starting to get...intense. I'm currently dosing calcium 2-part something like 70 minutes a day total, spread out over 4 doses. Then there's alkalinity solution which is nearly the same. I have to replace the solution in my jugs around once a month, and I think that is going to get more frequent as things grow, as it already has and i'm barely keeping Ca near 400 (and hopefully things DO grow)

So...I'd love to just spend the $ once, get a reactor going, tweak it, forget it and stop spending 20$ every 3 or 4 weeks on 2-part.

But the CO2 bottle seems to be the bump in the road. Is it just not allowed/legal to keep a small (5 lb?) CO2 bottle in NYC? More importantly, is there ANY place in Manhattan to get the thing filled? Or is the Bronx, Queens or Brooklyn the only nearby options for filling? Of course there's the issue of me not owning a car as I'm one of those New Yorkers...

Also, before I research this further, how often would a CO2 bottle need refilling, a bottle that feeds a reactor, which buffers a 120g SPS/clam heavy reef?

TIA good hobbits :tank:

Never heard of not being allowed to keep co2? They use it for painball. As far as changing the bottle its once every 4 months or more

It's illegal to have a paintball marker in NYC. It is also illegal to have a assualt slingshot and kung fu star. Can't wait for Bloomberg and Ray Kelly to leave.

The only cylinders you have to worry about are propane cylinders. They are illegal. I have never seen or written a VO(violation order) to anyone for 02(oxygen)or co2in their apartments. You'll be fine.

Also to the one guy Ray Kelly and Bloomberg have nothing to do with this. That would be the FD, buildings department and OSHA.

N.Y. PEN. LAW ? 265.06 : NY Code - Section 265.06

It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly possess any air-gun, spring-gun or other instrument or weapon in which the propelling force is a spring, air, piston or CO2 cartridge.

If anyone has had any personal experience with getting a CO2 bottle re-filled by Able Fire and you feel like PM-ing me, I'd certainly be interested in hearing your experiences...do they only swap, fill your bottle, cost etc.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance and education about the CO2 bottles in NYC, especially you JimmyRider for citing law from your experience. Thank you also for your service as a firefighter - I'm glad we have guys like you keeping an eye on things and carrying my fat *** out of bad situations. Seriously. I can't carry half the gear you do, let alone my fat behind, in a dark building full of smoke and godknowswhatelse. I lived across the street from engine 22 / ladder 13 quarter for 10 years, they seemed like nice guys. I found out after I moved that my great uncle was chief at that house for decades. My cousin rides a rig now in Seattle.

Sorry about the trolling. Now that the thread has degraded into name calling and offensive picture posting, if the mods want to lock it, I won't be offended.

Again thanks all for the help. To those of you looking to troll and stir up trouble, enjoy the anonymity of the internet. SIGH

PS - Ray Kelly is a good guy. Any 72 year old police commissioner who still wears an ankle holster is OK by me.

Yo Jedi. Didn't mean to throw your thread off topic, was just letting you know my experience in the matter and that you'd have no issues but mr smarty pants know it all about nothing must have had too much caffeine today.

No worries Jimmy, you're a good guy - we've spoken before (didn't we talk about my pup?) I'm with you 100%. Sorry you got dragged into a troll fest. Ah the internet right? Opinions on the internet are like privates in the Iraqi army....

Have to say its the first time I have heard CO2 tanks to be illegal in NYC not to mention paint ball markers (you can walk the streets with the PB marker if that's what you mean). You can get the C02 tanks and refills at the PB shops or at a scuba diving shop.
Stingray Ops is on Grand street in Brooklyn not sure if they have 5lbs tanks though its a PB shop. Your best bet for the tank maybe online or at a scuba diving shop.
