I have to make 8 holes and have a drill bit that I have used to make 4 already. I was wondering how many holes can typically be made with a drill bit before having to be replaced?

What you Drilling, Glass, plaxiglass, steel, wood? It depends on what you're drilling and the drill bit used. You will know when the drilling time is getting harder...

There is no way to tell, you use it until it is worn out. If the bit starts to heat up discontinue use until it cools down, this will extend the life of the bit. Also, always make sure you are using the right bit for the job meaning wood for wood, metal for metal, masonry for stone/cement etc.

Cheap bits that are coated will only do a few holes depending on how you treat them and what exactly they're made of. The estimates I hear are 15-30 depending on quality. The solid bits will do a few 100 with regular sharpening with a sand stone maybe over 1,000 over their life if you take care of them but you're looking at well over $100 a pop depending on size. For the regular reefer the cheap bits aren't a big deal since you just need a few holes but the bits we use will last forever and the price per hole goes way down, plus you don't have to worry about them braking mid hole.

Dont know what you guys are talking about :) I have had the same bits for 5 years and drilled probably close to 100 to 150 holes and its a cheap coated bit from ebay that cost me 20 for both. Take care of your tools and they will take care of you :)
