SHARK AND RAY TOUCH TANK
Back to Exhibits

Soak up the science in the Shark & Ray Touch Tank! This addition to the aquarium features a large, unique tank where visitors can touch sharks and rays. It is a great opportunity to learn about these fascinating creatures in a hands-on and interactive way.

The Shark & Ray Touch Tank features Bamboo sharks, Bonnethead sharks, Cownose rays and Southern rays.

Bonnethead sharks feed on small fish and crustaceans like crab and shrimp. They are in the same family as Hammerhead sharks. They are ram ventilating meaning they must remain in motion to keep oxygen flowing over their gill slits in order to breathe.

White Spotted Bamboo sharks feed on small fish, worms and crustaceans. They are nocturnal and live in coral reefs. They have been known to lay eggs that have successfully hatched without being fertilized. This is known as parthenogenesis.

Southern stingrays feed on small fish, worms and crustaceans. They are able to detect electrical impulses of animals near them. They have a small tail spine (the rays in the take have the spines removed) that are filled with venom.

Cownose rays primarily feed on bivalves, they can crush the shells with their plate-like teeth. They migrate south for the winter. Large schools of up to 10,000 animals will travel together from the coast of Florida to the Yucatan in South America.

Learn more about these amazing creatures when you visit the aquarium!

They had a stingray touch tank at Manhattan Aquariums years ago, which was pretty cool. I'd love to have that someday but an atty salary may not be enough lol.
I didn't know you could pick up urchins.
