I cleaned out my garage this past weekend and found two buckets of salt that were never opened. When I opened them they were both hard as rock. I was able to scratch the top of the salt in both buckets and loosen some of it. What I want to know is if the salt is still good? Finding the two buckets of salt, on top of taking the reef equipment that I did not sell out of storage started that feeling everyone on this site knows all too well.

I have used old hard salt when I was completely out of salt before with no ill effects however it does take a longer time to clear up and I have read that the calcium levels drop once the salt is hard. I probably won't do it again.

I don't have a tank set up at the moment. If I used the salt it would be during the initial set up and breaking in of a tank. I would not be concerned with Ca at that point. I'm just curious to know if the integrity of the salt is still good after all this time being that it hardened.
