I think it really is based on "market" value like anything else is for a certain product. Some things hold their value more than others. AIs, Vortechs, Tunzes are very good examples. They depreciate slower because of quality and demand.

As far as low balling a price, I personally just ignore the PM rather than shout them out. The word firm is usually what it means. OBO is meant for best offer. If something has been for sale for x amount of days/weeks than obviously it isn't selling at that price or the right buyer isn't available.

Then there are a lot of people who think you should sell your like new equipment for dirt cheap. Besides the actual product, condition should really drive equipment. I tend to keep my equipment as good as possible while some other reefers aren't as friendly or somehow finds cat hairs and crap all over it.

I don't like to haggle. If I like something then I pay for it.
But I also agree with OP, if something is a year old, I wouldnt want to pay more than half price for it. As such, I dont usually get used equipment, only new.

I find it humorous when people sell their 2-3yo evergrow like lights that they paid $300 for back then and think they still are worth $150 when you can buy them new now for $100.

I agree anything in saltwater loses its value pretty quickly. Most equipment I've bought second hand I've regretted not getting new. Doesn't mean there aren't deals to be had, but really like someone said, if you aren't in any pressure to sell and want to get top dollar for your used gear, be prepared to bump for a long time. It's called priced to sell. It's the same with real estate, if the for sale add is 3 months old and 3 pages of bumps and buyer backed out, it's usually a tell tale sign.

And to those that saying this is a troll thread and it should be closed, there's been very good constructive conversation here, so how can it be trolling and why should it get closed? Smh

I'm pretty sure most of us here besides a few r working middle class regular joes we live in the highest cost of living area in the country so even if ur making good $ but own a home /rent maybe have a family every $ counts and once all the bills are paid there's not all that much left for leisure etc....
Just still don't see the issue or problem with making an offer weather it be low or high or whatever it's the starting point to negotiate the sale!

I never call anyone a lowballer. Make me an offer, I'll either take it, make a counter offer, or tell you I'll pass. Takes like 30 seconds to reply to a message with a response, no need to be a ****

Welcome to my world...the car business...low balling/counter offers/negotiations are a way of life, part of the sale process...rich and poor alike, everyone wants the 'best deal'...no need to get your feelings hurt...
IMO a 'low baller' is better than no offers at all...at least there is a possibility of putting a deal together.

I've gotten some great deals on used equipment on this forum. Plus, IME, other reefers have been super generous and they throw stuff in when they can. One person read online that my daughter was looking for a tank and he GAVE us a whole set up for free!

The few times I've sold things here, I'd much rather hear an offer than hold onto something I don't need anymore. If the offer is too low, you can just say no.

People here use this term like there describing the lowest of humanity. These are the same people that will by a light for $260. Use it for one year and then try to sell it for $200.
I feel that a light that was used for a year is worth half its price.
Now, does that mke me a low baller????
if it does, then I am a proud low baller thank you

Yes, it does.

if some one low balled me on an item that they needed and i have no use for then i will be happy to sell it to you for your offer. and if i really felt sincere that you need it.
but i have seen members low ball members, and 1 month later flip it for a profit. not a nice thing to do, unless they inform you thats what they do, flip items for profit. but i don't think its nice to do that to people on a forum you will likely inter act with in the future. these kind of members ruin it for some who really needs it to succeed in the hobby.
if flipping is your thing, then go to craigslist or ebay. thats the way i see it.
