I don't see much information or Data for Clams here at MR. I would like to see forum for variety Clams. Is they one and I'm I missing it. Since I just bought one would like to see photos of them. Let's show and discuss about the beauty of Clams. Not only I find them so colorful. But understanding them too.

What kind of clam did you get? I've bought almost every clam on the market (Crocea's, Maxima's, Squamosa's, Derasa's and Gigas clams throughout the years. Crocea's and Maxima's do better when they are attached to a rock where there byssal threads (or foot) holds the clam in place. They can get up to 6" long on average in captivity. The other three clams mention have enough weight to their shell and their byssal thread opening is smaller preventing predators from go in like the other two. I had bristle worms enter from the byssal gland and eat out a crocea from the inside out when the clam got weak. Crocea's and Maxima's have the best coloration on the with a variety of pattern. Read up on Daniel Knop's Giant Clam book on how to care for them: http://www.amazon.com/dp/3921684234/?tag=reefs04-20

You can see the clam in my Avatar when I had it. Grew this beast (Gigas clam) which has a Blue/Purple Mantle (one of kind when I bought it) from 8 inches to 22 inches around 25 - 30 lbs in about 4 years. Good luck!

Popular species of corals should have their own threads to discuss :argue:

I picked up a blue Maxiam's about 2inches and place in Qt tank. I placed a flat rock under Cla. By the second day he attached his foot. So far he looks very healthliy. I place in Qt tank make sure no hitch hikes are on shell. Also didn't want a fish to stress him out.
Thanks for the information and the book.

It's great that you have it in quarantine. Smaller clams are more sensitive to stress so if it's attached on the rock leave it alone. It'll continue to send more threads to make a stronger bond. Move the rock with the clam on it if you need to move it up into the tank to get more light.

Pyramid snails are another predator of clams that hide under the mantle and the byssal threads area. If you see any, use some tweezers to pull the pyramid snails off of them. They are usually active at night. You'll see pictures of them in the Knop book.

Because if you notice if you go to unread posts in the morning, 17 of 20 new posts are wtb or f/s threads. There is a very low thread rate as of a year ago maybe more of reef related topic threads. It's sad but true

mike, what happened to the big clam, 22"?

Getting too big and afraid the tank was going to crack on the bottom. When the clam closed water would jet out the top of the tank. I believe another person in LI now owns the clam I had. Probably 2.5 feet by now.

I got tired of the trolling and endless garage sale posts. No quality discussions anymore.

I would love to see more clam content. I've been thinking about getting one..

Ditto, wish I would've looked more into clams before I bought my Copperband Butterfly. One day I may switch him out of the tank for a couple clams. Really love the look of them

that clam must of looked amazing.

Yeah that was one of a kind. I had a group of 3 to 4 of them that I bought off Clams Direct. Don't see those around anymore in that color. Most Gigas clams are an olive drab color. Funny thing is they spawned in my 270 gallon tank a few times when I did a what change where the temp was off a couple of degrees or the chiller stopped working one day and it hit 82 degrees while running three 400 watt Iwasaki 10 bulbs. Tank was all milky for several hours.

Macropora, I notice the clam moved very little and not center under light. I figure the light was low and bright. So I raised it a little and notice the clam moved to center and open nicely. Is it because when they are small they a little sensive to bright light. How long you think I should keep in QT tank. Only thing I have in QT tank are few frags of SPS.
