Dear all my hobbists!

I've been MR's member only since last months and all the info that I see going back and forth is so deeply thoughout and all you guys are fanatics who knows what they are talking about!. Sites such as these are so great to furthering the knowledge of each aquarist that we become conservationist of our passion! reef.

I've included some pics of my fish that I've had for long time, and no matter how good our setup is it will always fall short to the actual reef.

My statement mission I guess is that we should know our boundaries of what can and cannot live in our tank, and we should do everything to help our pet fish to thrive in our captive system.

The three fish have massive fin erosion, hole in the head diseases!
I do have probes, the cause for it was that I was away to school and so no proper diet was taken and no water change for while! I'm trying to regenerate their health with selcon, viachem, etc

Purple tang 8yrs
Yellow belly 7yrs
Sailfin tang 7yrs

so guys lets share our knowledge of what fish lives and what doesn't!!!

Sorry Aaron! and all of those who feel sorry for my fish, believe me I'm the saddest ㅠ.ㅠ

What I was trying to say was that even the species known "easy" to keep in the aquarium may begin to deteriorate for being captive raised.
so lets avoid those species that are nearly impossible to keep alive in our tanks! U know supply & demand, no demand, then they will be left alone out in the wild!

Again, I'm so sorry for the condition of my suffering fish!

Dude, the guy knows he made a mistake... instead of smacking him in the face with it, try offering some help or condolences... unless you've never made a mistake, in which case bash all you want.

Good luck nursing them back to health Seth.

Hi ,
I have just recently joined MR altho I have had reef tanks since the late 80's and just wanted to say Digtalreefer you're absolutely right , we have all at one time or another made those "holy crap what happened" mistakes that we all regret but try and move on and learn something along the way...

Sethkim, it's very obvious you are trying to reverse a very sad situation. Good to hear. I agree with Rick (rstimeout). Feed them lots of Nori soaked in selcon. Hopefully that'll help to improve their condition. As Dave (spykes) said, HLLE is very difficult to eradicate. Making their condition better might at least alleviate their suffering.

Good luck

Hey Sethkim - what are you doing for your fish in addition to the selcon & viachem?
I'm no expert but I've been down this road with HLLE on one of my Oscars (same disease FW or SW..) a few times and have helped a number of other folks and all of the fish have recovered...if you are running carbon, I would suggest you remove it. Though it's never been proven, it has often been suggested that carbon dust may play a role in this disease.
Since my last bout with this I never put carbon back into that tank and have had no further issues with HLLE..it's been about 2 years now.

In addition to that, I make sure I include vitamins in their diet, and water quality needs to be one step above pristine

Best of luck to you and your fish!! We're all pulling for 'em!

just want to learn more and by no means i am trying to bash you by asking all the following questions:

how long does this take to happen?

do you think diet and lack of water changes caused that and are you sure?

are the sources of problem that caused their present conditions still present in your tank?

can an experienced fish guy explained how these conditions come about?

my stomach turns when i see these pictures and worried my pets will fall victims of the same diease when i wake up next morning. can i call it a diease btw?

Seth you are brave indeed. I am sorry to hear about the fish but I think you are on the right path to bringing them back to health. Good luck and let us know if we can help. It happens to the best of us.

HLLE as I understand is brought on by poor diet, poor water quality (high Nitrates, lack of Trace Elements) and possibly electricty leaking into the water. It usually takes a few at least a couple of months for it to get as bad as these fish are.

I would also like to point out, if you are using grounding probes to make sure you test to make sure they are indeed working. I used to live in a very old house with questionable wiring (along with everything else), I had noticed the start of HLLE on my Imperator, from reading the mags (no internet back then) I found I should try grounding the tank. I purchased a probe hooked it up to the tank and when I went to adjust the positioning of it, got a bit of a shock, it was just a decent tingling, but scared the crap out of me. I one by one shut off everything in and supporting the tank in hope of finding the faulty device. After unplugging everything except the probe, the tingle was still there. I unplugged the probe and it went away. So again if you use one, it's a good idea to test after installing it. Another thing I've been told by electricians, without a probe, you are safe from leaking electricity in the tank, with a probe it is grounded and you are no longer safe if a piece of equipment fails. So if using a grounding probe, make sure to use a GFCI on all your equipment.

hey SethKim--good luck and please keep us posted on how the fish recover. We've all done things like that (my shame was adopting as scolymia and watching it wither away until someone indly pointed out taht it needed to be target fed...boy did I feel like a horrible "parent"...but today it is lush and thriving (and fed 3x weekly)).

A good idea is to add Vitamin B12 to the water too--it's an appetite stimulant (1000 mcg/10g tank water), and beta-glucan, which is an immune system booster. You can get it mail-order or from natural foods places. Highly recommended for sick fish--does make a big difference.

Good luck--
Christine
