Here is an FAQ we assembled for the Frag Swap.

Any additional questions or comments, feel free to post them here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: What is the Frag Swap?
A: The Frag Swap is an open community event for coral and fish exchange.

Q: Who can come to the Frag Swap?
A: Anyone. There is an admission fee for members and a discounted fee for guests of members.

Q: What is the NanoConference?
A: We will be hosting two guest speakers presenting on aquarium topics that are of interest to all. There will also a continuous slideshow of photos taken by our members during the entire event.

Q: I?m new to all this, can I come to the Frag Swap?
A: Absolutely. The Frag Swap is probably the best way for you to experience the hobby and meet your fellow reefers.

Q: I don?t have anything to trade. Can I buy something instead?
A: There are numerous options if you just want to buy items. There will be an auction, a grab bag with random corals, a free raffle for reef related items, onsite livestock vendors, group buys, etc. All you need is your wallet.

Q: Do you know that it is Tax Day?
A: Yes, bring your refund check!

Q: What is the Frag Swap like?
A: It is somewhat like a festival, lots of people talking, walking, browsing, eating, etc.

Q: What about the weather? Can we get rained out?
A: No, the event is being held indoors. Bathrooms are onsite.

Q: What about food? Will there be anything to eat?
A: Admission includes a catered lunch, beverages, snacks, cookies, etc. There are also numerous cafes and delis on the edges of the Pratt campus.

Q: Is there anything else to do in the area?
A: There are several beautiful gardens on the Pratt campus filled with art exhibits. More information will be available onsite.

Q: What can I bring to the Frag Swap?
A: Enthusiasm! The Frag Swap is an open event, meaning you can bring your own coral, fish, livestock and personal drygoods to sell or trade. There will be a lot of other people doing the same, so it is recommended to establish trades in advance on our message boards. Feel free to post what you have.

Q: Will there be supplies available at the swap?
A: Yes, free Ziploc bags, rubber bands, a coral dipping station to kill pests, fragging tools, etc.

Q: Can I set up a table at the swap?
A: We have vendor tables available for a nominal fee. You will not be able to set up a table if you have not registered in advance. Register by sending an email to [email protected].

Q: How much space will regular members have? Don?t these things get crowded?
A: Not this time! We have a great new space with lots of seating areas. You are welcome to set up your own little home base with chairs in the designated areas. Chairs will be provided.

Q: How do I bring my corals for trade?
A: People normally bring a large cooler with their corals packed in bags inside. Pay attention to the temperature in the cooler. Use heating elements if it is a cold day. Make sure you label all your items. Also, for items that you can?t see well in a bag (i.e. zoanthids) print a color copy of a photo to show prospective traders what it looks like in your tank.

Q: How can I give back to Manhattan Reefs and support the web community?
A: We have an area at each swap for livestock donations. You simply bring an item, bagged with water, and place it in the bins. Please be sure to write your username and a description of the item on the outside of the bag with permanent marker. We will auction off the items at 4:00 and whatever your item sells for will be credited towards you as a donation to Manhattan Reefs. Thank you in advance for supporting us.

Q: Do you do anything to support the environment or promote conservancy?
A: Absolutely. There will be a local environmental group onsite with information on the protection and preservation of wildlife and our environment. We will also be giving away free DVDs promoting the ?Freeze a Pest? process that we follow for disposing of caulerpas (seagrass).

Q: Did you say free?
A: Yes, there will be a lot more where that came from. You will have to show up to find out!

Great FAQ's Josh. Will Manhattan Reefs be selling their namesake coolers and fragging tools? The coolers were extremely handy for members to transport their trades/winnings/purchases home in after the days events ended.

Josh:

You should consider using www.fragswapper.com for your frag swaps. It was designed by one of our members of NCPARS as a very useful tool for frag swaps to list the available frags, pre-arrange trades and sales of corals, and some other swap management goodies.

There are quite a few clubs using it now, and I seems to work well.

Interested in Pratt reef aquarium tours. More info please.

You can pay at the bottom of this page:
http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/view.php?pg=frag_swap_rsvp

The Pratt Reef aquariums are 3 of the oldest reef tanks in the region. Two of them are heavily SPS/LPS dominated, the third one is a clam tank. There are a wide variety of rare fish as well. The sizes range from 50(?) to 200+, they are in the Pratt Writing Center which is a really nice place to sit and observe the view.

Randy Donowitz runs the project and last year Manhattan Reefs donated to buy a new tank to replace an aging acrylic one that was showing its age. We also called on our local electrical and plumbing gurus (Frank & Tristan) to do the whole thing up.

The last time I was there Tristan was showing off his latest invention, a caulerpa reactor (it's VERY COOL).

Anyhow, there are a lot of details about the tanks that I don't know so it is best to experience it with a guide (either Randy or Tristan, but I know some of the interns know the details as well).

It is in the same building as the swap but we outgrew the writing center so we are doing guided tours this time. It should take about 15-30 minutes but you should probably stay longer!

Is there kids at the frags swap, can you take your kids along (I have three girls)?
Unfortunately grand parents are a bit far (Florida and France) and taking a babysitter for the full day (cost!!!) make you think twice about it.
Were they kids at the precedent one?
Thanks
Vero
ps could perhaps trade them for coral if they misbehave!
