I had a coolpix 990, but I have replaced it with
a Nikon D70 with a 105mm Macro Lens. The
coolpix is great if what you are taking a picture of
stands still, while the (more expensive) D70
is fantastic, even on moving objects.
Linked is a image of a brain coral. Most of the
details (on the tenacles for example)
are not visible to the naked eye. The depth of
field is tiny.
It is hard. The effective aparture becomes smaller
as you approach 1:1. You have to keep the
shutter spped high because the coral is moving.
That, and despite the ammount of lighting over the
tank, the tank is really not that bright compared
to outside. Normally, for macro, one would just
pummel the subject with the flash, but the glass
causes problems with this. Has anyone tried a remote
flash mounted on the top of the tank?

Nice pic, ji. But can't you use a smaller aparture and increase the DOF? :?
I've got a Minolta 4.0 megapixel. I love it for an everyday digital camera. And, I can do closeups too. Works great for reefs. Now, I just have to control the pics down to a reasonable size once I've taken them.
