Hi Scallop-- I agree with your thoughts here and only wish you had told that store owner NOT to sell that sea slug or even to have it in the store!!!! (and yes, I am a store owner and NO, I do not carry sea slugs EVER).
I do not hesitate to say NO when someone wants to buy something that they should not have to begin with and thankfully, people seem to appreciate that.
Please people, these animals did not ask to be taken out of their ocean homes- and when you buy them- you are responsible for them for the REST OF THEIR NATURAL LIFE!! A "renegade bully" deserves a good life also.
Think of this responsibility first and then buy!!!

Scallop-- telling the store owner NOT to sell that slug, may have made him/her angry,
but if the owner was so irresponsible as to just make a sale- they deserved it!!(and maybe they will think about things first also)
I don't understand why ethical people even buy at stores like this. Buying for the cheapest price possible encourages low end dealers who only care about making a buck!!
Sorry- but your story of the woman and child made me angry also.

Bugmuncher-- when one of my customers ends up with a "renegade" (animal that reverts to unacceptable behavior)- we have them set up a "bad boy tank" as a satellite tank off the main system.This gives the animal a good home and you can keep them where they can not hurt anything else and still have good water quality.
I am afraid that if you return it to another LFS, that they might not tell the next customer that it is a renegade.

I am glad this thread has become a serious discussion on welfare of the animals we often take for granted.

Hindsight being what it is, I should have asked the LFS worker or owner not to sell the slug to them. Perhaps he might have listened or at least the mother and daughter.

I do realize that most of the messages were just kidding however I know there are some pretty irresponsible people out there. Unfortunatly if we all dont do our best to practice responsible reefkeeping. We may (hope not) not be able to import anymore.

The sattalite tank is a good idea as long as it is not too small for the animal. However doomed to a life in the sump (kidding or not) probably happens.

I think for the most part we are all pretty responsible. We should all do our best to keep it going.

hmm...when i want a pretty fish, i just drive home and google it and find out what it's about. then if i think it will do well in my tank, i get it. i googled paddlefin wrasse and one of the first links was to this:
It should reside in a 50 gallon or larger aquarium with larger, aggressive tank mates, and plenty of rocks for hiding. It will become territorial and harass any new additions to the community, therefore, it should be the last fish added to the community. It may be kept with a mate if the aquarium is 75 gallons or larger. It may eat mantis shrimp and bristleworms. It does not eat corals or live plants.

you chose an aggressive fish that's known to do exactly what it's doing. maybe you should re-think your selection process instead?
i'd return him for a less aggressive fish, or, if it's an aggressive fish only tank that you want, i'd simply accept the aggression as part of the paddlefin's makeup, and choose his tankmates accordingly.

early on, a friend of mine was getting rid of a camelback shrimp. i ignored the reason for his dislike of that particular creature and threw it in my tank. soon after, i saw it pulling the heads off of my xenia. i grabbed a net and tried to capture him angrily to no avail. i then decided to keep him well fed, and this worked until he died. in hindsight, instead of a net, i should have grabbed a rubber mallot. every time the shrimp picked at the xenia, i should have whacked myself in the head repeatedly. this would have been much more effective than the net.
